Maybe it's not too late for Gillibrand & Co to do a mea culpa, admit they rushed to judgment and make things right. Forcing someone out for political expediency is not the high ground when you really think about it. It's the low ground. And if a rethug takes the seat in 2018, women will be set back even further.

No, the optics of reversing course would be even worse than the current optics.

Yes, they should immediately do a group conference and ask Franken to stay

They should reverse course, but not until after the upcoming special elections in Alabama, etc

They should reverse course only if Moore wins AND is accepted by repub senators

No, because Franken is guilty as charged and resigning is the correct action

Do it a couple of days later, so it gets some news coverage, but start softening up the troops.
My answer was YES! You lie and railroad someone without due process, that is wrong. It is not about what is politically the best call for them. Get it right!!!

(3,011 posts)in time. Democratic Leaders: Stand up now, say you were wrong. Stop acting like you're scared to death of those people with microphones. Answer boldly and confidently that he deserved due process and no one should be tried by the media without an opportunity to be heard.
It ain't complicated!

And this is ALL about politics and optics now.

(17,984 posts)I get what you are saying. If she retracts, then both she and Franken look bad. We might lose two senators instead of one.

(19,240 posts)As Barthes wrote, the left always has an advantage because they are more creative. I've watched a lot of politics over the last 50 something years, but this is playing out as something new. I like new. It confuses the hell out of the right wing which can only repeat the same old tired political ploys.
