I have been reluctant to share this but I think its time to speak out.
My personal nightmare started in the 70s, when I became enthralled with Frankens wit and comedic style on Saturday Night Live. Little did I suspect that a sexual predator lurked behind that engaging smile.
But there came a night I cant recall the exact date, having tried to obliterate it from my mind when I could plainly see that Al was leering at me from my TV screen. It was as though he was staring right at me undressing me with his eyes, the sick desire in his heart clearly evident in his facial expressions and his throw-away funny lines.
I was traumatized. But despite being shaken to my core by his overt sexual advances, I continued to allow this obvious lecher into my living room, week after week. To this day, I blame his hypnotic powers for drawing me into his perverted sexual fantasies.
Oh, sure, there were other women who thought this sexual molester was looking at them, not me but Al and I know the truth. He wanted me all along.
As Al moved from comedy to politics, I watched him closely, ever aware of his true nature. I bought all of his books, I even contributed to his campaign all the while knowing that he was just another unrepentant serial groper trying to cover his tracks.
I followed his attempts to champion womens rights clearly an attempt to distract attention away from his devious ways.
If anyone thinks I am making this up, I can post photos Im looking for them now of me cowering on my couch while watching Al trying seduce me through the airwaves. Of course, I look like Im laughing and enjoying his highjinks but its clear from the pics that just before they were taken (by my husband), or maybe just after they were taken, Al Franken was, without any doubt, thinking about grabbing me by the waist, fantasizing about hugging me without my consent, and dreaming about the day he would write a skit for me that included my having to kiss him when all I really wanted to do was grab some guitarists ass.
I really dont know what further proof is needed to support my claims. Is my word not enough? Are Al Franken's decades-long cover-ups of his true agenda not sufficient to convict him?
(The above IS satire. Please do not pass this along to any Republicans you may know or it might be used as a template by some RWNJ who has been chosen as the next Franken-accuser, who doesnt have enough common sense to realize just how ludicrous the allegations against him have been so far.)

(4,516 posts)They joined the mob and did not follow our tradition of giving Franken the right to a hearing.
I am very disheartened to see Dems act this way. Somehow we are all diminished when people act like they did.
It is pure projection on the part of his detractors. What dirty little secrets are you all hiding?

(9,894 posts)I had a rather innocuous short post suggesting that Democrats not jump on some bandwagon or other, I cant even remember what the issue was, pulled. The take home I got was that it was fan club comments only here, no actual discussion.

(14,578 posts)Maybe they even agree that these 38 senators are wrong in this case.
This party has GOT to stop being so spineless and fearful of right wing mudslinging. Franken did all the things that people are told they should do in the face of such allegations, and look what happened to him.
Roy Moore, a known pedophile, recently remarked that America was great back in the days of slavery, and his party has endorsed his candidacy, and Trump is down there doing a fucking rally.
So...the Democrats have some morality but no guts, and the Republicans have NO morality whatsoever, but lots of guts.
Hmm...let me think...which one wins elections?
Let me suggest that morality WITH guts will win more elections. Because unless Gillibrand abjectly apologizes for her part in this railroad job she can count on my strong opposition all through the primary. And I don't think I'm the only one. It will be bloody, just like the last one. Because I'm not going to sell out my own sense of justice for political expediency. That isn't who I am, and I have no respect for people who do.
Oh, I know you're laughing, because we've lowered the bar on that so much for politicians, but there it is. Unless you stand for something, and stand by your own, even when the going is tough, you don't deserve my respect, my donations or my vote. So mark my words. Still a Dem, but wallet closed until Franken is absolved, reinstated and these spineless people who railroaded him have publicly apologized.
DO THE RIGHT THING KIRSTEN AND KAMALA. MERKLEY. SANDERS. ALL THE REST. Take a page from the courageous 58 in the House.

(25,862 posts)I have met Franken a couple of times.
Most recently, back in June I was flying to Portland, changing planes in Denver. I was sitting in the gate area in Denver, not paying attention to anything, when I heard someone in back of me say, "Oh, I thought I recognized you. I'm surprised you're not surrounded by a lot of people." And a very familiar voice said, "I generally get to travel unrecognized", or words to that effect. I was sitting two places away from Al Franken. I spoke briefly to him, saying how much I admired him.
It was interesting to watch him kind of shrink up and keep his head lowered, because he is of course very recognizable. I snatched a couple of pictures of him on board the plane as I was sitting about two rows in front of him. Later the woman who was seated next to him spoke to me (she'd noticed me taking photos and approached me in the luggage claim) to say he was just a lovely travelling companion, but didn't speak much as he was doing work on the flight.
He was on his way to Portland as part of his book tour. That evening I called the bookstore to see about attending the event, but it was sold out. Darn.
Somehow it's very hard to see him as any kind of a sexual predator.

(13,895 posts)in the many years that I have been here. I guess one can be a victim of abuse as long as the bad guy is a republican or a dem you don't like. Nance, your post is just awful. I expected a whole lot better and more decent from you. Just awful...and a real disservice to women but maybe politics trumps all these days.
I'm a female from Minnesota and I feel violated.
I've been here a long time, too, and some of the saddest things I remember are the way the Wellstone memorial service was turned against Democrats.
How Al Gore had the election stolen from him. How Al Franken lasted through a very long re-count process so that my vote counted that time.
Coup 2016, the Grand Old Politburo party. Is Denny Hastert out of jail and campaigning now for Roy Moore?
Republicans are masters of dirty tricks. Why do democrats fall for it? How stupid can they be?

(16,672 posts)This is a very touchy subject, and while I agree Franken was railroaded this made me cringe a bit.
Even mocking 'liars' is playing with fire. Expose them as liars but mocking may keep actual victims from having the guts to come forward.
The liars are ones who make it bad for the real victims.
we can disagree - no problem.
