(28,795 posts)leaving this, though, so others realize how we got where we are today:
As you know, one of the key points in the GOPAC tapes is that "language matters." In the video "We are a Majority," Language is listed as a key mechanism of control used by a majority party, along with Agenda, Rules, Attitude and Learning. As the tapes have been used in training sessions across the country and mailed to candidates we have heard a plaintive plea: "I wish I could speak like Newt."
That takes years of practice. But, we believe that you could have a significant impact on your campaign and the way you communicate if we help a little. That is why we have created this list of words and phrases.
This list is prepared so that you might have a directory of words to use in writing literature and mail, in preparing speeches, and in producing electronic media. The words and phrases are powerful. Read them. Memorize as many as possible. And remember that like any tool, these words will not help if they are not used.
While the list could be the size of the latest "College Edition" dictionary, we have attempted to keep it small enough to be readily useful yet large enough to be broadly functional. The list is divided into two sections: Optimistic Positive Governing words and phrases to help describe your vision for the future of your community (your message) and Contrasting words to help you clearly define the policies and record of your opponent and the Democratic party.
Please let us know if you have any other suggestions or additions. We would also like to know how you use the list. Call us at GOPAC or write with your suggestions and comments. We may include them in the next tape mailing so that others can benefit from your knowledge and experience.

His voice is no more important than any other senator. In fact Kirsten Gillibrand has a better record of opposing Trump than he does (she's the only senator to vote against his entire cabinet).
flotsam
(3,268 posts)particularly for his questioning during hearings. He was a known supporter of women's rights and a humble family man in a body where that is not as common as the senators would have you believe. In short he could have fairly aspired to higher office and instead the party followed the lead set up by a friend of Hannity and Don Jr. and there IS going to be hell to pay for that. Gillibrand led it and she has been tarnished by it...

(1,736 posts)I got to meet Amy Kloubachar in Minneapolis before she was a senator and really enjoyed the conversation. I have also admired Al Franken for effectively fighting the usual Republican vote caging tactics during his first campaign, keeping the Minnesota Senate delegation blue during the Obama wave, and contributing to the supermajority that got Obamacare passed. I admire him lately for challenging the segregationist Jeff Sessions and helping to shame the Republicans into appointing Mueller.
I see much to admire in Franken's record, and if he had run for president, he would have had significant appeal beyond the solidly blue states. Obviously, events have intervened. Nevertheless, no need to build up one of Minnesota's admirable senators at the expense of the other.

this outrage is a wee bit over-the-top. We've already had one Senator fall on his sword but now we're calling for Gillibrand's crucifixion?
Really??
Makes me wonder who will be left in this march for the perfect senator/candidate. Also reminds me of all the shrieks that Pelosi must step down, get out of the way for younger blood, etc., etc., etc.
My suspicion radar is beginning to beep. Loudly. Eating our own is never a good thing. Be it Franken or Gillibrand. But there are certainly others who would benefit if as Dems we began a serious fratricide, particularly of those mentioned as viable 2020 contenders.
Just saying.
BlueWI
(1,736 posts)Free Republic, having played such a key role in removing one of the most high profile opponents to the Trump agenda. Free Republic has to be happy that no complicated Russian trolling or expensive opposition campaign was necessary to get rid of Franken. The Democratic Senate leadership was perfectly willing to do the removal themselves.
BTW, I also get that extended intraparty venting isn't going to win future elections. However - we are barely 48 hours after a duly elected Democratic senator was encouraged to leave his office on flimsy charges in the midst of a full blown crisis of the Republic. If Schumer, Sanders, Brown, Heitkamp, Baldwin, et al., didn't expect blowback from their base, that's a whole new level of tone deaf political leadership.
I am going to stay politically active as a Dem because it's the only viable opposition party. And I hope others will do the same. But this episode has given me a new level of disappointment with a party I've supported for a long long time. And this is a common sentiment among a lot of the people that the party will count on come election day.
So it goes.

(1,907 posts)She threw Al Franken, a democrat who respected women and their cause, under the bus. No love for her.

(1,907 posts)She deserves nothing.

(3,515 posts)Not enough to just bar them in sexual harassment cases.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)But working to bar them in sexual harassment cases is a good first step in my opinion.

(3,515 posts)But for a time at least, mandatory arbitration agreements were prohibited in California in employment cases, employment contracts.
That would cover a lot of sexual harassment cases.

(1,018 posts)Kamala Harris too and that makes me very sad. As a Californian, I know I will have two Democrats to pick from in the General Election. Kamila will not be the one I vote for.
I'm still hoping for a miracle.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)Pretty much every Democrat in the Senate took the same position.

(1,018 posts)but I did not see her as one that spearheaded the move, so am slightly less disgusted. Harris and Gillibrand both posted their rationale on their FB pages, though since the blowback, it seems Harris has taken that post down.
If Tom Steyer runs, I will vote for him, or not vote at all, against Feinstein. In California, we would have two Democrats to choose from in the General, so there is no danger of a Republican taking the seat.

(26,626 posts)but this horrific mistake of railroading Al Franken and not seeing it as a play into the hands of Roger Stone and the right wing bullshit.. especially after the election. We have got to defend our own when it's an obvious hit job..
This was a huge mistake. I have no appreciation for all Democratic Senator and Reps who called on Franken to resign.

(6,044 posts)and she has been tireless seeking justice in that arena.
She has been making a difference.
I think she would be running for president-not simply because of personal ambition-but because she wants to be in the best position to effect positive change.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)She has been a real champion.

(37,748 posts)Your active revels in widening divides are clever...
If there is ever a divisive wound on DU, your consistency applauding its existence is almost as dramatic as your alleged concern over its existence.
