"The Republicans in Congress are about to get brutal. Everything you think they wouldnt dare do, they will do. They will strike quickly and broadly. By the time you understand the breadth of their destruction, theyll be rolling and youll be trying to figure out how to respond.
"Nothing is sacred. Expect attacks on the social safety net, including Social Security and Medicare. The third rail of American politics now has a short in it. The social contract that we built in the New Deal and Great Society is in tatters."

"The South will rise again" was a warning carrying the most dire consequences!

(3,417 posts)I met a young man last night who lived in a blue precinct in North Carolina during the 2016 election. He told me that his vote was not counted due to last minute manipulation of precinct boundaries. Five days before the election, he was informed that, while he had not moved, his precinct had been changed, and he needed to re-register at the elections office in order to cast a vote.
State and local elections are the key to re-gaining democracy. The Republicans have no interest in fairness. Their currency is cash to buy power, and cash to hold on to it.

(28,799 posts)that the wingnuts in my family are in CA. my brother in particular. we grew up in the same house but boy have our paths diverged in the area of politics.
look at an SPLC map of hate groups. the GOP is not going away from anywhere - but they will lose in many more places after this presidency and this tax bill etc.
i'm so damn naive that i thought the republican party would go the way of the Whigs and Tories after gwbush. clearly i could not have been more wrong. people do not learn from history.

(578 posts)The last 4 years prior to Governor Cooper winning in 2016 was hell down here in NC. The republicans controlled both chambers of Government. We had a nutcase republican governor in McCrory who would push through crazy stuff at will such as the unpopular bathroom law that was anti-trans. The crazy thing about it was despite all the bad things McCrory did he barely lost to Cooper. I think he lost by only a few thousand votes. I believe strongly what caused him to lose was that the state lost college basketball tournament games from being played here due to the bathroom law. College basketball is huge here in NC and it caused people to vote against him.

(24,579 posts)when people's votes are more influenced by college sports than discrimination against their fellow citizens. I live in GA where college football is king so I know where some people's priorities are. If Roy Moore had been caught dissing Auburn or 'Bama he wouldn't stand a chance of election.

(28,799 posts)i was here when we went for Obama, and when the GOP took over with a vengeance. the republicans in this state are just as bad as any in DC, and they are relentless. it's like they're in a race with AL, LA, and MS to be the bottom of the barrel in the USA. it's a damn shame too.

(1,278 posts)but I have lived here for 20+ years, all of them in Mecklenburg County. At least we have semi-enlightened local leadership that tends to be Center-Left, occasionally Center-Right.
When former Gov. Pat McCrory (R) was "mayor for life" here, he wasn't able to do extreme stuff because Council and the Uptown McColl, Crutchfield, Belk types (old monied class) kept him in relative check. He allowed himself to be led around by the never-Charlotte General Assembly, and it cost him re-election.
When Dems screw up, they get punished (Patrick Cannon comes to mind). Not all is roses around here, not unlike any other urban center with rising rents, falling wages, and Gestapo police (Keith Lamont Scott)
