That would be me. I live in GA, outskirts of Savannah.
Thinking seriously of moving to the outskirts of Philly, cause I can.
Thoughts?!
I AM a Yankee, and miss them, 'bless their hearts'!
I have heard great things about the area, there are jobs, etc.
Does anyone here live there?
Do tell!

(131,202 posts)But no NY Yankee fans in MY family! Son in law's a Phanatic. IF by Yankee you mean one of us, northeasterners, YES!
Daughter + son in law live in NJ, Philly suburb, married last year and looking for house now. Don't know about jobs generally but he's got a good one, for state/county agency, and daughter just passed her Occupational Therapy 'bar' exam, and has had a few interviews, so looks good. Not aware of any of their friends without jobs.

(7,358 posts)or rather, if you are Progressive and vote Democratic, sorry to say, but if you vote for Obama as many of us reluctantly will, the electoral college votes will go to Mitt, especially in this red neck state of Georgia .. you get the idea. Pennsylvania might just need your vote. I always wanted to move to some state where my vote actually counted in a presidential election. I live just outside of Atlanta and it's not much better .. I say go for it.
babylonsister
(171,102 posts)I happen to think President Obama is the best person this country has going for it. Sorry you don't. And it's not about moving for my vote, but moving for me. I KNOW who I'm voting for, and why.

I, for one, will PROUDLY vote for President Obama (that is his official title, you know).
However, your reluctance is duly noted.

(21,925 posts)I lived in Savannah for two years when I was a teen in the late '60s. Our house was on the corner of Bull Street and East 48th. One summer the heat and humidity got so bad I started have wheezing fits where I had trouble breathing. I wasn't used to it. And on certain days, the sickly sweet smell of the paper mills up the Savannah River was overpowering. But the city was very pretty and the people were generally okay. I guess now though there must be three or four times the population.

(11,441 posts)"I gotta get back North." I haven't been to the Philly area in about 5 years, so I'm not up on housing, jobs, etc.; hope some in PA/DE/NJ respond to your questions.
babylonsister
(171,102 posts)That's another reason why it sounds appealing, and thanks for asking. I'm old enough to head towards light, or my perception, if I can. NY too big, busy, expensive, likewise with the west coast, Philly might fulfill my needs as I perceive them.
WorseBeforeBetter
(11,441 posts)NYC is out of the question price-wise. Probably DC as well due to housing costs -- Philly might be that happy medium. We'll see. Good luck!

(22,057 posts)We're retired and not looking for work. Do you just miss home or is the area as bad as Mississippi (which is where I'm stuck right now). I gotta believe pretty much anywhere would be better and Savannah has a rep as a cultured area. If you don't mind my asking, whats your take?
babylonsister
(171,102 posts)where that's what I'm dealing with. Home is not Philly, but I miss a bigger population, different POVs, etc. You might do fine here, Rowdyboy, but I'm not doing so well.

(11,366 posts)Ranked "13th Gayist City" in the country, but still NEEDS more progressive votes.
My note: move to the city, not the county. The county really sucks and makes us look "red" on the maps; however, the city is so blue we just voted in as mayor a Latina who worked for Cesar Chavez.

(12,132 posts)but I LOVED visiting Savannah...before he died, we would visit my wife's cousin every summer and I miss that and him so much. He had lived there a long time and always had new stories to tell and new things for us to go see and do. He loved the history of the city and we loved hearing him tell it.
babylonsister
(171,102 posts)I do also, but not enough of them to live the rest of my years here. I need action, and Savannah can be pretty sleepy.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)so I imagine I would eventually run out of those things. (action and stories). It's easy to love a place ya only visit.
I've only been back to Dallas (where I grew up) twice in the last 28 years and there's a lot I miss about it. Much bigger town than here - even though I'm in central Florida, it's still awfully small town around here. (Area's big but the minds are small...although it's trying...)

(1,831 posts)One of the things I love to do is see the cultural differences while walking down Broughton St. Everything from near-antebellum southern, to dyed spiked hair. Having SCAD here is an incredible piece of luck. And the squares are always good for an oddity here and there. as well as the historical significance. It's not every city that can claim to have been a Christmas present to Abe Lincoln!

(1,831 posts)Have been the direct opposite. When we visited HHI we had to park 3 blocks from the beach and lug our stuff. And Tybee offers the bonus of at least 3 good fishing spots on the North and South sides. Plus I had a parking ticket forgiven there. Not all bad. HHI sure has a lot of golf courses. Plus Tybee is closer, so that's where we usually hang. Wife with book, me with metal detector, cast net, or fishing pole. So cliche!

(129,662 posts)There is currently an "in-migration" back to SE PA and even into the city. The old suburbs are actually renewing themselves and the old "downtowns" are adding all sorts of pedestrian-friendly features and renewed storefronts etc (alot of it thanks to the enterprise zone funding generated under Clinton). The immediate rim counties have gone blue or at least purple (save for maybe Bucks County).
All the denigration of the NE as the "rust belt" leaves out the fact that the rust has been scraped off in many areas revealing the shiny virgin steel underneath. Only downside is dealing with the rotational governorships --> Dem to Rethug --> Dem --> Rethug about every 8 years (basically since 1963 I think).

at St. Joseph's University. We grew up together in northern Jersey,
so yeah, we're definitely both Yanks.

My brother lived in Berwyn, PA for some years when
he was working at GSK. They liked it, too, but
he and his wife are Repubs. I visited them several
years--at Christmas--and I thought the surrounding
small towns were quite picturesque. It's a little farther
out of Philly--about 24 miles--but a mainline town.
On edit: I live in Chapel Hill, NC and I LOVE it here.
I know there are several other NC folks on DU.
The Triangle area--Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill
is vibrant--better job opportunities than the rest of NC--
and Chapel Hill is an oasis of blue. All the universities
and colleges in the area tend to make it more liberal,
accepting, and cosmopolitan. Yes, NC has its share of
rednecks outside the Triangle (but Asheville is quite
progressive, too) but I think you'll find cost of living
a little better if you stay in the south and locate
yourself in a progressive town. There are lots and lots
of transplants in the Triangle, in fact the town of
Cary is considered an acronym for Containment Area
Relocated Yanks.
Good luck!

(47,953 posts)Can't say I blame you. I think there is more real culture in the city proper, especially downtown/forsyth Park. But my god there are a lot of brainwashed idiots around them. I live in the islands and even though they are wealthier, most still spout the kool-aid crap whenever it comes up. Just be careful about where you go up there, lots of wing nuts everywhere. I personally would be looking for a location that has a history of being a 'liberal' haven, be it associated with a University, performance arts, or some other thinking person's attractor.
I personally would love to move back to the west coast, where I am from, but no jobs in my profession there. Sigh.
