Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock...and now Roy Moore.
First off, congratulations to Alabama's incoming (unless something funky happens in the coming weeks) Senator Doug Jones. His win shows what happens with effective voter outreach.
Still, the fact that nearly half of the voters in that special election picked somebody with multiple allegations of abusing underage girls disturbs me. It got me thinking back in 2012, when Missouri and Indiana got Democrats in the Senate because Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock had loose mouths, not loose hands. Specifically Akin's "legitimate rape" comments in a TV interview and Mourdock claiming pregnancy from rape was "something that God intended". Their comments were inflammatory enough and part of such a disturbing trend among Republicans that year, Wikipedia has an ENTIRE article about Rape and pregnancy controversies in United States elections, 2012. At least Missouri and Indiana are decent enough to give Akin only 39% of the vote and Mourdock 44% in 2012.
Now, I sure hope the same people who helped Jones win Alabama do the same for senators McCaskill in MO and Donnelly in IN. From what I'm reading they've got vulnerable elections coming up.
