Chicken plant fined for illegal hires

MONTGOMERY – A Decatur chicken chopping plant is being fined for its employment of a dozen teens that state officials say were obviously too young for the jobs, despite paperwork claiming they were older.

Their documentation showed large discrepancies in age, “so egregious that a layperson could identify these documents were forged,” according to an Alabama Department of Labor report.

The youngest child employed by Gemstone Foods LLC was 13. A labor official wrote in May the company should have known the teens were too young for the jobs.

“Warning signs were abundant for the employer although no action was taken,” the official said.

The company is being fined $64,200.
