Alabama House passes election audit bill amid criticism

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama House has passed a bill requiring probate judges to audit one randomly selected precinct in each county after any county or statewide election.

The bill's sponsor, state Rep. Joe Lovvorn, R-Auburn, said the law is not intended to overturn election results but "to test the machine procedures and report any potential issues to the state."

However, the bill faced opposition from lawmakers including state Rep. A.J. McCampbell, D-Marengo County, who said the process for selecting precincts is vague and could be used to target minority communities.

The Senate must approve the bill before it goes to the governor. A similar bill passed the House last year but did not make it out of the Senate.
