Related: About this forumWe are now accepting new volunteers to serve on the MIR Team from June - September 2023
This discussion thread was locked by EarlG (a host of the Announcements group).
Volunteers who wish to help keep DU running smoothly should consider joining the Malicious Intruder Removal Team (MIR Team). The role of MIR Team members is simple: they are empowered to revoke the posting privileges of people who show up at DU with the intent to disrupt.
Members of the MIR Team are provided with tools to delete spam posted by people who have had their posting privileges revoked, but they are NOT responsible for removing community standards violations, locking threads, or dealing with violations of DU's Terms of Service wherever they may occur.
If you are a DU member with at least six months of membership, at least 1,000 posts, and proof of identity (ie. you are a Star member) then you can apply to be a member of the MIR Team.
How do I apply?
Simple: just post in this thread to let us know that you'd like to give it a try, and you could be selected by the Admins. There is no application form to fill out, and no confidentiality agreement to sign. MIR Team members do not have access to any privileged information about other DU members.
We plan to introduce the new MIR Team on Wednesday, June 7.
NOTE: If you are a current MIR Team member who is eligible to serve next term, please do not state your intentions in this thread. Instead, use the thread in the MIRT forum. Thanks.

(3,303 posts)I was going by this:
"If you are a DU member with at least six months of membership, at least 1,000 posts, and proof of identity (ie. you are a Star member) then you can apply to be a member of the MIR Team."
Thanks

(3,991 posts)I'd be interested in the future (not right now but maybe in September).
For my education can you tell me how these posts are spotted? Is there a place where people report suspected posts or is it just a matter of finding them? I'm an Admin in an active Facebook group and people report posts and individuals from time to time. When I get an email notification about it I have to delete/edit/remove based on what I see. I'm wondering if it's similar to that. Thank you!

(33,359 posts)They also review obvious vulgar, bigoted posts through jury notification and act accordingly.
If you decide to join MIRT in the future, you will be amazed on what goes on behind the scenes.

(3,991 posts)Thank you for the answer. I will plan to apply in September then. Ive done several jury things so i get it.
Being retired I'm online more often (and bored). A new thing to do could be welcomed.

(33,359 posts)We have our busy and slow days, but the constant is the spammers and trolls constantly trying to disrupt.
EarlG
(22,619 posts)To be clear, MIRT actually deals with *new* trolls, and does not deal with removing posts at all.
MIRT does certainly deal with repeat trolls -- a small handful of people who for some reason keep coming regularly to DU to cause trouble, and are repeatedly banned -- which I think is what GP6971 means by "long term" trolls. But MIRT only deals with trolls who are new DU members -- MIRT is not responsible for banning people who have been around DU a long time.
In addition, while GP6971 is correct that MIRT does "review obvious vulgar, bigoted posts," MIRT only uses the content of those posts to determine whether someone should be banned -- MIRT is never responsible for removing rule-breaking posts.
