NEW YORK (AP) Nicholas Guido was showing off his new car outside his mother's home on Christmas Day 1986 when he was gunned down because he'd been mistaken for a mobster with the same name. The bad information, prosecutors said, came from two decorated police detectives who would later be convicted of moonlighting as hit men for the mob.
Twenty-nine years later, the city has reached a $5 million settlement with Guido's family in part of the fallout from one of the most stunning police corruption cases in New York history.
"This tragic matter involves the murder of an innocent man. After evaluating all the facts, it was determined that settling the case was in the city's best interest," the Law Department said in a statement. The family's lawyer didn't immediately return a call Friday night seeking comment.
Guido's mother, Pauline Pipitone, was washing dishes after Christmas dinner when gunfire erupted outside her Brooklyn home.

(1,397 posts)In another article on DU, we learn NYC settled for $3.9 million with the family of another person gunned down by the cops for no reason.
This is getting expensive. Someone needs to alert the NYC taxpayers to how much their cops are costing them.

I think 5 mill for killing a innocent man, i far to small a price for the City - and even if it gives the family some relief- it is to late, and to little for the man who got killed.. And this is a farce of justice if it took Twenty-nine years to solve the issue - and to give the family of the victim the money they should have been given at least Twenty Eight years ago...
And what happened to the two police officers who was moon lightning as hit men for the mobsters - do they had their life changed - like a life in prison, without the possibility of parole if they behave them self inside??
Just thinking about - being murdered because you have managed to save enough money to buy yourself a new car - and have the "arrogance" having the same name as a mobster - what a crime

(6,913 posts)Others are bad all the time. Corrupt, abusive, malignant. The problem seems to be identifying and getting rid of the really bad ones. And then, some police departments seem to seek out, encourage and protect the really bad ones. Interesting article in the 2/2/15 New Yorker about Albuquerque, New Mexico. It ain't pretty.

(6,241 posts)Nicholas Guido, I'd ask the city of it is the official policy of the NYPD that my client be killed on sight, with no due process?
This innocent man was just standing there. He wasn't commiting a crime. He wasn't threatening anyone. This wasn't an arrest that went bad. This was the NYPD hunting down someone with a name to murder him in the street.
It's supposed to be, "Bob Smith, you're under arrest for being Bob Smith."
Not
"Any of you guys know Bob Smith?" "Yeah, that guy is Bob Smith." *blam blam blam*
