Swastikas sprayed on Jewish fraternity building near UC Davis campus

Source: Sacramento Bee

Students at a UC Davis-affiliated Jewish fraternity house awoke Saturday morning to find two large swastikas spray painted onto their building.

Nathaniel Bernhard, vice president of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, said the vandalism took place between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday. He condemned the action, saying the hate crime threatened to rekindle race tensions at UC Davis. The fraternity house is located off-campus.

... UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi had harsh words for the perpetrators. In a written statement, she called the behavior “repugnant and a gross violation of the values our university holds dear.”

... The vandalism comes after the Associated Students of UC Davis passed an advisory resolution asking the UC regents to divest from businesses with connections to Israel.

The last thing that anyone in the fraternity wanted was cameras rolling in the house to record what was going on. Much like Vegas, what happens here--stays here.

Most frats also operate on a shoestring budget, so having security cameras rolling 24/7/365 is an extravagance that the members are unwilling to pay since they know that the footage can be used as both an asset and as a liability.

in the mid 1980's and the student body was made up of most Caucasian students but almost everybody there were pretty tolerant. I was an Asian in a mostly Caucasian environment but I felt pretty accepted. In my years there I might have experienced at most one incidence of racism: some guys drove by in a truck and yell out a slur; but every place can have jerks though. Still, for the most part everybody got along. I hope my Alma mater will come down hard on the people who did this.

However, when it comes to Jews, this is old hat. Economic disarray? Blame the Jews. Political ideology issues (socialism, communism, democracy)? Blame the Jews. Media problems? Blame the Jews. Of course, now there is Israel and Zionism...definitely, blame the Jews! It makes me wonder when the 4th Reich will rise and who will be leading it's resurrection because it won't just be the dolts of the white supremacy movement and their legion (army) of fools, skinheads, but one thing for certain, Jews will be one of the primary targets.

As well as recognizing who really is the source of the problem. Blaming someone is so easy, correcting the issue, not so much. I am so sorry Behind the Aegis, that is so wrong. People need to take a deep look in inside their souls, because they could be next. They are not immune however much they think they are.

make lemonade of lemons and thank whomever put there for the blessings of prosperity and auspiciousness. When everyone celebrates, they have taken the power of those who have put the graffiti on buildings.

The.Swastika.Is.NOT.An.Evil.Symbol and do a great disservice to the actual meaning of the symbol. Just because the Germans made it into something horrible for a couple of years shouldn't erase the the centuries of meaning before. We are doing a disservice to the Hindu people when you do that. This symbol is on Egyptian temples, on ruins worldwide. It is OUR symbol and we (at least in this household) have reclaimed it. Take it back!

I hate giving wikipedia the clicks but they do have the best definition of the swastika.

It is used to remind Jewish people that the Nazi's murdered them and a promise that the current crop of racists will do the same thing.

No matter how ancient the symbol, its use by white supremacist, Germanic supremists, Aryan, Master Race Nazi Germans was a symbol of subjugations and murder on a grand scale.

There was noting positive meant by this.

I do so love how things like this encourage people to tell Jews to "calm down and love the swastika's rich history." Regardless of how it has been used, to us, it has a very specific meaning, especially when used in conjunction with Jewish things.

it with its original meaning - auspiciousness and blessings.

The oldest known use of the symbol dates to 10,000 BCE - the nazi's were a mere blip in history.

Reclaim the symbol to its original meaning and it will no longer hold the power to hatred.

I stand with the ancients on this symbol - go look around at how old it is.

History has made it a symbol of hatred.

Maybe in a few centuries, people will have found new symbols to imbue with hatred.

But the meaning of the Swastika in this case is one of hatred, of racism, of anti-Semitism.

The people who use on Jewish fraternities, synagogues, house, and in other similar places are using it as a racist violent vile symbol.

I stand with Jews and other minorities against repression and violence imbued with that symbol.

If you wish to reclaim the symbol, then stand up against the people who use it as a hateful, racist symbol.

I have read that Jews no longer feel safe in France, and are looking to flee.

If people can't feel safe in "enlightened" western Europe because of their ethnicity, then where will they?
