Shots fired in Syria town where observers visit

BEIRUT (AP) — Opposition activists say Syrian troops opened fire on protesters, wounding eight in a Damascus suburb visited by a U.N. observer team.

Ahmad Fazwi, a spokesman for special envoy Kofi Annan, confirmed the foreign monitors were in the Arbeen suburb on Wednesday, but said he did not know if the team was present when the shots were fired.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says security forces opened fire after several thousand people took to the streets in Arbeen.

An amateur video said to be of Wednesday's protest showed hundreds of demonstrators crowding around two white U.N. Land Cruisers. A second video posted by the same user shows people running for cover.
