Possibly the largest index of government data in the world will be made public next month, a transparency advocacy group said Friday.
Comprehensive lists that show what information federal agencies hold, called Enterprise Data Inventories, will be released, according to the Sunlight Foundation. The decision follows a Freedom of Information Act request submitted by the open-government advocacy group more than a year ago.
We view this release as a significant victory for the open government and open data movement, the Sunlight Foundation in a blogpost. Rather than wondering what data the government has, we are all now in the position of policing how completely agencies are indexing their data, deciding what to publish and determining why some data cannot be public.
Construction of the data inventories began following President Obamas 2013 executive order to make such information more open. The lists are intended to help agencies develop a clear and comprehensive understanding of what data assets they possess, according to guidelines.

(29,414 posts)only the title and description of what that data is that's being made public. So, we'll know what kind of things our government wants to know about us without it divulging what it is that it has collected on us

(90,061 posts)This is important because one of the main pretexts for not releasing stuff is failure to get the specificiation of what you want right. If you don't know what's there, you don't know what to ask for.

(31,849 posts)Yes, it'll let me know what types of stuff the government has on me; but, it also give everyone else that information, too.
This is/will be a huge bump for data mining companies and corporations, in general.
