White House: Higher wages needed to make up for stagnation

Source: AP-Excite

By JIM KUHNHENN

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's top economists say that even as the U.S. has managed to kick start a lasting and growing recovery, modest wage gains are far from making up for decades of paycheck stagnation for middle-class workers.

The White House, in its annual report to Congress, also warns that despite the U.S. relative economic strength, slowdowns abroad still pose dangers at home.

The 400-page "Economic Report of the President" is a largely bullish portrayal of the economy replete with appendices, charts and statistical tables designed to support Obama's policy initiatives.

As a political document, the report is likely to find little favor in the Republican-controlled Congress. But as an assessment of the state of the economy, it broadly tracks with Republicans who say lack of significant wage growth is a critical flaw of the current recovery.

I'm truly fed up with the "My car is running extremely bad and slow" "Hey..no problem! We'll give it a good wash job and shine those wheels right up !!" scenario.

..."patch jobs" on everything. The minimum wage has fallen XXXX dollars in terms of real spending so the powers-that-be raise the wage by X (one X)...and will have graduated rises in the next few years.
Well, great...just great. ..so by the time that the rises are in full effect the minimum wage is still in the same spot regarding buying power as it was when we started the whole deal.

We're good about doing this kind of crap. Save a nickel, spend a dime.
Another example: My friend from Germany visits me sometimes and has said things like "Why do you make your roads so thin". I asked him "What"?
The Autobahn and most of their roads are made very strong in terms of road thickness. Ours are WAY thinner. Theirs lasts a long time. Ours, ...not so much. We would rather patch, patch, fill potholes over and over than do the things right at the start.

If you or anybody disagrees with me, I'm all ears. I'm quite capable of changing my views.
