(Chicago mayor) Emanuel heads to runoff against Garcia
Source: Chicago Tribune
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is headed to a politically risky runoff election in April after conceding he wont reach the 50 percent benchmark he needs on Tuesday night.
"We have come a long way and we have a little further to go," Emanuel told supporters at a union hall.
With 83.7 percent of precincts reporting, Emanuel had 45.5 percent to 33.9 percent for challenger Jesus Chuy Garcia, a Cook County commissioner. The two will now campaign for six more weeks and Chicago voters will get their final say on April 7.
Businessman Willie Wilson was running third at 10.5 percent, 2nd Ward Ald. Bob Fioretti had 7.4 percent and frequent candidate William Dock Walls had 2.7 percent, according to unofficial returns.

(24,333 posts)I wrote yesterday that if he gets less than 47%, he's in trouble.
He's kind of like Landrieux was in Louisiana, the has a ceiling.
If Chuy can get out the vote and can make nice with Wilson and Fioretti, Emanuel is done

(32,064 posts)The Chicago black population does not like Hispanics and vice verse. The black vote will go to Emanuel.

(24,333 posts)Everything I've seen suggests Emanuel is in trouble
I don't know if he'll win, but he'll squeak by less than 3 if he does

(32,064 posts)And participated in political campaigns there for every one of those years. That is what I base my opinion on.

(24,333 posts)We're both basing ours on what/who we know.
In April we'll find out
Just get out and vote no matter who it is.
I don't know where you live, but as you probably know, lotta Alderman run-offs.

(28,017 posts)The White House better be careful. Obama showed a little hypocrisy when he bitched about Bibi coming to Dc two weeks before Israel's election, but he has no trouble traveling to Chicago to try to push Rahmbo back with 50% or more. Hmm. Perhaps he should stay out of local politics after this result.
Rahm IS a bully, and chuy (pronounced chew Ee) has years of making personal connections. The unions, the schools, the breaks for huge corps, and rahm's connection the the new governor will be the death of Rahmbo. I hope.

(32,064 posts)All by less than 50%. He will take every AA ward in the run-off with more than 50% in all of them and easily win the run-off.

(12,296 posts)The Chicago School style of economic theory just doesn't work - at the Federal or State/Local level.
Privatizing everything and cutting the social safety net at the knees does NOT help society.

(36,437 posts)Rahm will likely tell him to keep his mouth shut until April 8 if he doesn't want to have to deal with Chuy running the main population center in the state for his entire term.
Rauner's been acting a straight fool since inauguration. He doesn't seem to realize that he has a super-majority Dem legislature that can tell him to pound sand on virtually everything.
