Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson expected to resign: Source

Source: MSNBC

Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson is expected to announce his resignation later today, a source close to the chief told NBC News’ Ron Allen.

The reported staff shakeup, which follows on the heels of Ferguson City Manager John Shaw’s resignation Tuesday night, comes one week after a scathing Justice Department report condemned the Missouri city for repeated constitutional and civil rights violations against black residents by its police department and courts.

The 103-page DOJ report, the culmination of a months-long investigation following the shooting death of unarmed teen Michael Brown by former Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson, found the city police department fostered a culture of racial hostility that included unreasonable searches and seizures, racial slurs, and the excessive use of force. The Ferguson judicial system was denounced for fining policies that used black residents as a moneymaking scheme to bolster the municipal budget.

Jackson, who has faced repeated criticism for his handling of shooting’s aftermath, when Ferguson was wracked by protests, has weathered rumors of his resignation before. The police chief previously denied any knowledge of a behind-the-scenes effort to negotiate his ouster, amid reports last October of a possible backdoor deal being brokered between local, state and federal officials that would include his resignation as part of a plan to overhaul the department.

Ferguson Police Chief, Thomas Jackson, Expected to Step Down Amid Criticism

FERGUSON, Mo. — The embattled police chief of Ferguson, the focus of bitter complaints of racial discrimination within his department that turned into national protests after one of his white officers fatally shot an unarmed black teenager last August, will resign his post, according to a city official who spoke Wednesday on a condition on anonymity.

The official, who was not authorized to speak for the city, said the announcement would be made later Wednesday afternoon, but he did not know when the resignation would take effect.

The chief, Thomas Jackson, who took over the Ferguson Police Department five years ago, becomes the latest high-ranking city official to fall in the wake of a scathing Justice Department report that accused the city of using its municipal court and police force as moneymaking tools that routinely violated constitutional rights and disproportionately targeted blacks. The municipal judge and city manager, as well as the top court clerk and two police supervisors, have stepped down in the wake of the report’s release last week.

Thank you Eric Holder for getting the process going. Still have a ways to go. Would be nice to see Nixon step up and say or do something. Ferguson is not the only city that does this in Missouri.
