9 California high school boys arrested in alleged sexual assaults of 2 girls

Source: CNN

Los Angeles (CNN) - Nine boys aged 14 to 17 were arrested Friday on accusations of unlawful sex acts against two underage girls for more than a year, on and off the campus of Venice High School, according to police and school officials.

Eight of the nine male students were arrested on campus, and the other was taken into custody off-campus, police said.

Detectives have identified a total of 14 people, all between ages 14 and 17, who allegedly sexually assaulted the two female Venice High School students multiple times, said Cmdr. Andrew Smith of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police were "rounding up" the five other alleged assailants, all minors, Smith told reporters Friday. Police have those students' names, he said.

In California

Doesn't matter that several of the "Male Minors" were under the age of consent themselves

I asked the question because apparently even consensual sex between a 14 year-old and another 14 year-old is rape, under the statute.

apply only within a limited age range. I'm not familiar with the California statute, but if I recall correctly, many states set the permissible age difference at two years.

Some states don't have Romeo and Juliet exceptions, including my own state. In IL, consensual sex between minors is legal, while sex between a minor and an adult of any age is a crime.

As far as consensual sex between teens in CA. There are other laws relating over/under 18 and more than 10 years' age difference between minors and adults (created to deal with predators having sex with teens at the age of consent). An atty gen. Ruling Suspended reporting and prosecution of consensual sex between a 17 year old and an 18-19 year old, even though it is technically unlawful intercourse.

Evidently the activity mentioned in the OP was not consensual.

In other words they were probably blackmailing them into preforming sex acts.

The pictures would be considered underage pornography and maybe even distribution of underage pornography if they were sent to other people.

If they were doing it on social media (Facebook) my guess is even if they erased it there is a record of it and it can be subpoenaed.
