Scott Walker: Flip-flopping charges are 'ridiculous'
By: Gregory Korte 1 hour ago
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker pushed back against allegations of flip-flopping Saturday in New Hampshire, telling reporters that some of the charges are ridiculous.
Its a narrative that other campaigns are pushing, Walker told reporters after an event at Concord High School, where he spoke to grassroots GOP volunteers in the early primary state. We have a strong reputation of keeping our word.
The Associated Press has reported that accusations of flip-flopping have intensified in recent days, with potential Republican rivals for the Republican presidential nomination circulating materials highlighting Walkers changing positions on ethanol subsidies, education standards, abortion and right-to-work legislation.
You have to be an authentic candidate, Steve Duprey, a Republican National Committeeman from New Hampshire told the Associated Press. If people think youre flipping left and right, that sticks with you.
Walker conceded that theres one major issue that he has changed his mind on: immigration.

CONCORD, N.H. --
............... When he attended last weekends Agriculture Summit in Iowa, he came out in support of the Renewable Fuels Standard, which mandates the government use a certain amount of alternative forms of energy, like ethanol, which is popular in the Hawkeye State, saying it is something hes willing to move forward on. Previously, he was opposed to such requirements for any industry.
My position was about Wisconsin and my position was clear, he explained. What we said in Iowa was pretty clear, as were going forward, that we want the standard phased out.
An aide then ushered the would-be candidate out of the hungry scrum of reporters, behind a red velvet curtain and towards a private reception closed to the media.
He had escaped, but only after experiencing first-hand the painstaking, meticulous scrutiny a new front-runner attracts.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker arrived in New Hampshire preaching small government and working to rebut claims hes changed his stances on key issues.
His surging popularity among republicans was on full display in Concord.
Unions protested outside his speech; republicans inside cheered as Walker called for tax cuts and eradicating terrorism.
We need a commander-in-chief who stands up and once and for all says our biggest problem is radical Islamic terrorism and we are going to do whatever it takes to weed it out all over the world.
Afterwards, Walker blamed GOP rivals for spreading claims hes flip-flopped.

In the presidential campaign of three years ago, Mitt Romney set a new standard for political flip-flopping all to no avail, of course.
But Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker seems not to be discouraged by Romneys electoral failure in that regard. Rather, Walker is borrowing a page or two from the Romney playbook, as we see in THIS PIECE from a Republican publication:
In the span of just a few weeks, Walker has apparently flip-flopped on a number of issues.
On the issue of immigration reform, Walker reversed his position and now doesnt support a pathway to citizenship like he said he did in 2013. On Monday, Walker signed into law right-to-work legislation despite saying in 2012, I have no interest in a right-to-work law in this state. .................

CONCORD, N.H. -- Likely 2016 Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker on Saturday defended himself against charges that he's a flip-flopper during a brief exchange with reporters following his only public event on a two-day trip to New Hampshire.
The Wisconsin governor said he always tries to listen to voters, when asked by Mark Halperin of Bloomberg Politics what the difference is between changing your mind on an issue and flip-flopping.
"The key is if you listen to people and you've got a valid argument for why you've done itwe've laid out exactly what we've done," he said in the state that will hold the nation's first primary next year. "But I think people want strong leaders and they want leaders who listen to the people."
My view has changed. Im flat-out saying it. Candidates can say that.

Gov. Scott Walker dismissed claims that he is a flip-flopper on immigration today, saying that it's "just a narrative from the other campaigns in response to the fact that we have a strong reputation for keeping our word.
"This is one that we listened to the people all across the country-particularly the board of governors-and saw how this president messed that up and that's an issue where I think people want leaders who are willing to listen to people," Walker told media scrum after his speech at a state GOP event here.

CONCORD, N.H. -- While acknowledging that he changed his views on immigration, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said Saturday it's "ridiculous" to call him a flip-flopper.
Walker has recently been criticized for changing his positions on right-to-work legislation and abortion, but he maintained that his views have been "consistent."
On immigration, he offered this explanation: "I think people want strong leaders and they want leaders that listen to the people.".............
He was asked directly for his position on Common Core and the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act, to which former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush gave his support Friday. Walker, who has made jabs at Bush in the past, declined to draw a comparison and instead stayed on message about transferring federal money and decision-making to states.
"I believe in high standards set at the local level," he said. But he didn't hesitate to criticize President Obama and his administration, especially when it came to national security............

............In the past week, aides working for other Republicans expected to run in 2016 have circulated materials that highlight Walkers change in position on immigration, ethanol mandates, Common Core education standards, abortion and right-to-work legislation.
The only major issue out there is immigration, and we listened to the people, Walker told The Associated Press on Saturday during his New Hampshire tour when asked about his critics. The other ones out there are just ridiculous.
One campaign has a spreadsheet that outlines when Walker changed a position in comparison to 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney. The analysis found that Walkers shifts on more than a dozen issues came an average of 15 months before the Iowa caucuses almost a year later than did Romneys.
Voters still dont know the real Scott Walker, said veteran Republican operative John Feehery, who is not aligned with any of the potential candidates. And if he thinks he can get them to like him merely by saying things that they want to hear, he is going to run into the same problem that plagued Mitt Romney: authenticity.
