Seattle University files appeal to stop union vote count

Source: Seattle Times

By Katherine Long

Seattle University has filed a second appeal to try to block attempts by its adjunct faculty members to form a union.

The appeal comes after the National Labor Relations Board’s local office issued a ruling earlier this month that appeared to clear the way for union votes cast last summer to be counted.

At issue is a vote taken last year by adjunct faculty members — also known as contingent faculty — to form a union through Service Employees International Union 925. Contingent faculty members, who make up more than 50 percent of the faculty but work on contract and are not on track to earn tenure, have said they moved to form a union because of concerns about pay and working conditions.

Seattle University has argued that they are working to fix compensation inequalities and other issues raised by faculty, and that a union is not the way to do it.

FULL story at link.

Church's dedication to social justice does not extend to economic justice, when the nickels are coming out of their own pockets.

Organized religions know no bounds when it comes to hypocrisy.

You have the right to be barefoot and pregnant if female, for starters. No matter what, and no exceptions.
Dying of some horrible disease, incurable late stage? No death with dignity for you, you have the right to suffer to your last breath, no matter what, and no exceptions.

Etc.

work for minimum wage somewhere. We have cut much from universities, and more is coming, so their future in those places is probably not all that great.

$54,705 per year

Can't have the adjuncts getting their dirty little hands on any of that. A VP of Parking might have to get the cheaper BMW.

did a semester as an adjunct faculty member. All universities need adjuncts and doctoral students. With these workers, they need not pay for full-time faculty. Most universities, I believe, are much like Seattle U, where 50% of the teachers have no benefits whatsoever. Oh, yes, for teaching a class for one semester, the university lavishly paid me $750.00. Whopee Shit!
