U.S. To 'Re-Evaluate' Peace Process

Source: Politico

By Sarah Wheaton

President Barack Obama will call Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on Tuesday’s election victory in the coming days, his spokesman said. But he suggested the conversation is likely to go downhill after the “mazel tov.”

In light of Netanyahu’s vow that there would be no Palestinian state during his tenure, the United States will “re-evaluate our approach” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict said Press Secretary Josh Earnest on Wednesday.

“It has been the longstanding policy of the United States that a two-state solution is the best way to address this conflict,” said Earnest during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One. The president still holds that view, he added.

En route to an event in Cleveland, Earnest also went out of his way to condemn “divisive rhetoric” from Netanyahu’s Likud Party. While Earnest did not cite the prime minister by name, a post on Netanyahu’s Facebook wall on Election Day warned, according to a translation, “The right-wing government is in danger. Arab voters are going en masse to the polls. Left-wing NGOs are bringing them on buses.”

This is just the point whereth US caught on. After having it spelled out to us. Directly. if Netanyahu hadn't been re-elected we would have ignored it even so.

Odds are we'll still ignore it, for all practical purposes. Republicans demand the dissolution of Palestinians, and Democrats live in fear of Republicans branding them "antisemitic" if we support Palestine or question israel.

Well. Our elected democrats, anyway.

A Two-State Solution is still the best way to go, seems to me. Granted, I don't know all the fine points, but I've gotta tell ya - it sure seems like a good idea for ALL concerned, PARTICULARLY the Israelis, to try to turn DOWN the heat in the Middle East. Seems like all bibi wants to do is turn UP the heat. And where will that get us, besides into another war? And I'm sure they fully expect us to lavish them with materiel support of the most lavish kind. They're gonna want more money and probably OUR boots on the ground. Can't we reevaluate THAT????? Shouldn't we reevaluate that?

From what I've observed, it seems to me that SOMETHING has to be done for the Palestinians. We've gotta do SOMETHING about their issues and needs. As long as they go begging, and don't get even a tiny bit closer to a home of their own, we will all have grief about it. And more grief. And even more grief as the weeks, months, and years drag on and they don't have a homeland. We HAVE TO do something about the Palestinians if there's ever to be even a sliver of hope for peace in that region.

I know this will likely strike some here and elsewhere as way too simplistic, but I keep defaulting on what a mom deals with. I'm a mom. And in the very small sphere of experience in which I've operated AS a mom, all I can think of when I see this shit play out is a bunch of adult-size five-year-olds fighting over the sole exclusive ownership of one toy. Zero-sum - it's gotta be all MINE and that means you can't have ANY!!!! Well, kids, there's only so much toy to go around and dammit, like it or not, EVERYBODY HAS TO SHARE!!! If you ALL want it and you ALL say you have a claim on it, and there's only one of it, then you ALL simply have to share it. There are no other options. And if you don't like it, sorry, but that's just too bad. That's how it IS. That's just life. You ALL have to learn to SHARE. Whether you like it or not.

because of the Israeli practice of "creating facts on the ground" that are contrary to the official rhetoric. No doubt many, maybe even most, Israelis were for a two-state solution and thought that their government was negotiating in good faith. But the pattern of actions have been consistent since 1948: grab as much land as possible and make it as hard as possible for Palestinians, all the while delaying any agreement. There can be no viable state in the territory that is left, so the only just solution would be to grant all Palestinians citizenship and equal rights in Israel and set up a process for compensation for those whose properties were taken or destroyed.

Now we get to see how the Israelis treat the Palestinians when they aren't trying to live in separate overlapping states.

If it turns into, as another poster said, "apartheid with a side order of ethnic cleansing," then it's high time for the US to re-evaluate all foreign aid to Israel.

Shooting rockets with high explosive tips into random neighbors.

Passing out candy to kids in the street when your team knocks down the WTC or stabs a random Jewish innocent on the street.

Overkill.

Still, it's disappointing to see Steely Dan used in defense of warmongering.

It's okay if you have not had to defend your own life with force. I have. I would do it again, but we don't always get that chance in life. It is what it is. Live and let live if possible.
