(Bloomberg) -- Congress must review any nuclear deal the U.S. and other world powers reach with Iran, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said.
Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey said Sunday he has real concerns over the talks and would not support any deal that leaves Iran a threshold nuclear state.
Talks between Iran, which holds the worlds fourth-largest oil reserves, and world powers continued for a fifth day Sunday in Lausanne, Switzerland. Irans insistence on an immediate lifting of United Nations sanctions is a main obstacle to securing a framework agreement on its disputed nuclear program by March 31, European and U.S. diplomats said on Saturday.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Bob Corker has said the panel will consider legislation on April 14 that he is co-sponsoring with Menendez, which would allow Congress to review and approve a final agreement.

(2,574 posts)Anti both Cuba and Iran relations. Pretty destructive to the fundamental democratic ideal of "world peace."
Starting to remind me the kind of smug "elder" who sat on draft boards during Vietnam

(7,412 posts)And many are not happy about the Administration giving Congress the stiff-arm on this matter.
Rep. Tom Cotton's Israel amendment passed the Senate 4 days ago on a 99-0 roll call vote, that's hardly partisan politics on this matter.
This is interesting because a large bipartisan group wants some say in this deal, possibly a group large enough to override any veto.

(30,439 posts)Congress can do nothing if other countries lift their sanctions on Iran. The Republican-controlled Congress also cannot stop Obama from voting yea at the UN lifting worldwide sanctions. If all the other countries lift their sanctions, lone American sanctions imposed by Congress will be impotent and pointless.
So I would urge Congress to show a little more respect to Obama, he can really fuck them over here. Not to mention there are a number of sanctions he can lift simply by executive order. Sanctions are enforced by the executive branch.
Netanyahu and his Congressional prostitutes should show a little more respect, or Obama will poke them in the eye and the deal goes forward anyways.
