Abuja (AFP) - Nigeria's main opposition on Tuesday claimed victory in the country's tense election as its candidate Muhammadu Buhari said he was "very confident" of winning the presidency.

As final results came in, All Progressives Congress (APC) spokesman Lai Mohammed called the election for Buhari, as the 72-year-old built a lead over President Goodluck Jonathan in the closely fought campaign.

"This is the first time the opposition has voted a government out of power in Nigeria's history," added Mohammed, as senior party leaders gathered in a celebratory atmosphere in the capital Abuja.

Buhari himself told AFP he was "very confident" of a win, with just three states to declare and the retired army general more than 2.75 million votes ahead of Jonathan.

Nigeria opposition declares victory, says 'witnessing history'
Source: Reuters

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) declared victory in the presidential election on Tuesday, saying Africa's most populous nation was "witnessing history".

"This is the first time in Nigeria that a sitting government will be voted out of power using purely democratic means," APC spokesman Lai Mohammed told Reuters at the house in the capital where party leader Muhammdu Buhari was watching the results come in. "The people of Nigeria have taken over."

He added that the APC had no reason to doubt that President Goodluck Jonathan would concede defeat.

"He said several times that he would relinquish power if he was voted out in a free and fair election," Mohammed said.

He would ignore attacks and kidnappings. He lied about girls being returned to get political support.

This dictator who should have been given life or exiled is claiming victory before all the votes have been counted. Just because the Americans and British support him doesn't means that he can say whatever he likes about the election. I know Americans are going to be confused because all the news from the western media have been reporting on how glorious, how historic and how his victory would strengthen democracy in Nigeria. All that is BS, he has not won anything, you cannot declare yourself the winner.

Yes Jonathan is not the best president ever, he is corrupt (they are all corrupt) but he is not evil and he is doing all he can to fight the terrorists created by Buhari's people. Buhari is going to be corrupt just like the rest of them but in addition to it all, he is also evil just like the past dictators. Political opponents disappeared under his leadership and just like past Nigeria dictators, they fight armed uprising by destroying whole villages unlike the slow but humanitarian method of Jonathan

There is news of Nigerian Stock Market rising on news of this ex dictator winning election but nothing was said of Nigeria becoming the No.1 economy in Africa despite low oil prices, strong dollar and terrorism (most likely funded and supported by Buhari and his ilk)

Buhari is only good for non muslim Nigerians
