Canadian diplomat's teen son shot dead after botched drug deal in Miami
Associated Press in Miami
Wednesday 1 April 2015 17.44 EDT

One teenage son of a Canadian diplomat was killed and a younger son is under arrest after they were involved in an alleged drug deal in Miami that turned into a gun battle.

Jean Wabafiyebazu, the 17-year-old son of Canada’s consul general in Miami, Roxanne Dubé, was killed on Monday along with a suspected drug dealer following a botched marijuana deal. Police later arrested his 15-year-old brother, said the boys’ father Germano Wabafiyebazu, who was formerly married to Dubé.

The Miami police department would not comment on the shootings. The Miami-Dade state attorney’s office confirmed that another man, 19-year-old Anthony Rodriguez, was charged with second-degree murder and marijuana possession with intent to sell for his alleged role.

The Rodriguez arrest report says a second man was shot to death inside the house, but he was not identified. Prosecutors also said Rodriguez was wounded in the arm in the shootout.

1. Diplomatic immunity won't fly for Marc Wabafiyebazu, Canadian teen in Miami shootout case

Diplomats and their families posted abroad enjoy broad immunities from laws in their host country.

No so for consular officials or their children — a distinction that became clear this week following a deadly shootout in Florida, a state with particularly harsh murder laws. The shield of diplomatic immunity affords no protections to the teen son of Canada's consul general in Miami, Roxanne Dubé, according to Canada's Foreign Affairs Department.

The teen, Marc Wabafiyebazu, was arrested on a charge of felony murder Monday in connection with what police describe as a botched drug-related robbery. Roxanne Dubé was named Canada's consul general in Miami last November but reportedly arrived in the city with her two sons in February. (Government of Canada)

His older brother, 17-year-old Jean Wabafiyebazu, was killed in an ensuing gunfight inside a Miami apartment complex. Another 17-year-old, identified in news reports as Joshua Wright, also died in the shooting.

an armed robbery that went south on them and somebody fought back. How the hell do kids get involved in this crap? They don't seem to have been living a life of deprivation so it wouldn't be out of need. I just don't get it.

Or maybe it's the oh-so-cliché rebelling against a privileged background to show how "REAL" they are, or just some passive-aggressive way to get back at mom?

9. Punk threatened to kill police detective; said he'd shoot him in the head.

The police report also quotes unidentified witnesses as saying Rodriguez brought two pounds of marijuana to the house and began to negotiate.

“During the negotiations, both deceased victims became involved in an exchange of gunfire,” the report says.

In addition, Marc Wabafiyebazu faces charges of threatening a police officer while in custody, according to a separate police report. The boy is alleged to have said “he was going to kill (a detective) and that he would shoot him in the head”.

That report also briefly refers to a gunfight in which Jean Wabafiyebazu was killed.

If there was an exchange of gunfire, that means the dead Canadian brother was armed. The article mentions the family only moved to Miami in February. So less than 2 months and the kid is armed and dealing drugs. USA! USA! Only in America! I'm curious to read how the Canadian press covers this.`

Police believe Dubé's sons were attempting to rob drug dealers at an apartment building when gunfire erupted, reported the Miami Herald.

Monday’s fatal shooting followed a hit-and-run accident in Miami that left Canadian tourist Alexander Sanghwan in critical condition. The 23-year-old University of Ottawa researcher was struck around 5:30 a.m. Sunday while walking away from the King of Diamonds strip club.

Police later arrested Olivia Bennett, a 26-year-old dancer at the club, on two felony charges.

A dealer is probably one of the last people who punk kids should try to hassle. Geeze what a tragedy.
