Nearly two months after going on strike, workers at the BP-Husky Toledo Refinery in Oregon remain on the picket lines, even as striking employees at other plants have ratified new agreements and gone back to work.
Both the union and the company say negotiations are continuing, though theres no timetable for when the work stoppage may be resolved.
The company is insisting on some pretty concessionary items. We're trying to find a remedy that's suitable for both parties, said Jonathan Cathers, an official with the United Steelworkers Local 1-346.
The union represents about 350 hourly employees. The refinery has continued to operate with replacement workers.

(8,956 posts)In 1959 when I was 10, my family moved from Toledo, Ohio to Oregon (state). I've lived in Oregon (state) ever since. Interestingly, Oregon (state) has a Toledo (a small coastal community). I read the OP title and "we have a refinery in Toledo, Oregon? How, I wondered had I not known of a refinery in Oregon, over at Toledo, for 55 years. Of course, Ohio has both a Toledo and an Oregon (a smallish suburb to Toledo), too. When my family prepared to move from Toledo (Ohio city) to Oregon (state) in 1959, my industrial arts teacher thought I was moving just down the road to Oregon (Ohio city) and was somewhat disturbed on my last day in class to find I was actually moving across the country and wouldn't be able to finish my woodworking project like he thought. Total recall.

Seriously, there is a national agreement now but a lot of individual refineries have not signed yet. Shell was leading in the negotiations for the companies and they agreed on a new contract with the USW oil workers a few weeks ago. There seem to be a lot of local issues this time. I think two Marathon refineries are still out also.
