Police say a man who kidnapped his wife shot a guard at the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters in Maryland before leading police on a chase into Washington, D.C., that ended with the suspect and an officer wounded.

District Police Chief Cathy Lanier told a news conference Thursday night that shortly after authorities received a report of a kidnapping, a guard at the Census Bureau saw two people fighting in a car.

Lanier says when the guard approached the car, he was shot. Fire officials in Prince George's County say he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Lanier said the suspect in the shooting was spotted and chased by Washington, D.C., police. The suspect's car crashed in northeast Washington, and in an exchange of gunfire, the suspect and a police officer were shot.

A security guard was gravely wounded on Thursday evening during a shooting at the U.S. Census Bureau and the shooter is still at large, authorities said.

The guard, who was posted at the gate, was shot at least once in the upper body and was taken to the hospital in "extremely critical condition," Prince George Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady told the Daily News.

The gunman apparently rammed the gates of the Suitland, Md., facility with a car, and then blasted the guard in the chest and ran away, a Fox 5 reporter on the scene wrote on Twitter. The shooter is believed to have barricaded himself inside the building as heavily armed police prepared to enter.

The status and of the gunman wasn't immediately clear, but Brady said the fire department medical responders remained on the scene in case their was further need for services. The FBI has joined the investigation, according to Prince George County Police Department.
