Man planning attack on “one or two churches” arrested Sunday in Paris, says French interior minister

Source: France 24

French police have arrested a man found in possession of hand guns and a Kalashnikov assault rifle who is suspected of planning terror attacks on churches in France.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced on Wednesday that the 24-year-old suspect, an IT student who is also an Algerian national, was arrested on Sunday.

He is also suspected of killing Aurélie Châtelain, a 32-year-old fitness instructor, on Sunday in the Villejuif suburb of Paris, Cazeneuve said.

A car believed to belong to the man was seized by police. And in an eerie reminder of January’s Charlie Hebdo attacks, in which 17 people were killed, they found an "arsenal of weapons" including a number of handguns, a Kalashnikov assault rifle and bullet proof vests in the car's boot.

So he didn't dodge his bullet ...

I wonder how the fitness instructor/dancer fits in? Did she find out what he was intending to do? Before the announcement of his arrest, all I can find is French reports saying they had no idea why she was killed, eg

It's surprising that was still being published on Tuesday, if she was shot on Sunday and he was arrested that day too.

I see Sky News has this:

France police foil 'church attack plot'

French police have arrested a man suspected of planning an attack on "one or two churches", the country's interior minister has said.

The man, 24, an Algerian national, was known to security services as having expressed a wish to travel to Syria, Bernard Cazeneuve said.

He is also suspected of the murder of a woman found dead near Paris.

The man, a computer science student who had lived in France for several years, was detained on Sunday after he apparently shot himself by accident and called for an ambulance.

Police followed a trail of blood leading to his vehicle, where they found notes "unambiguously demonstrating" he planned an imminent attack, according to Mr Cazeneuve. "Several war weapons, hand guns, ammunition, bullet-proof vests, and computer and telephone hardware" were discovered at his car and home, Mr Cazeneuve added.
