Michigan governor Rick Snyder set to enter Republican 2016 presidential race
Source: Guardian
Michigan governor Rick Snyder may be the newest GOP candidate for the White House.
Snyder mingled with donors at a meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas on Friday and told at least one attendee that he was a candidate.
Former Minnesota senator Norm Coleman told reporters on Saturday morning: I met with Rick Snyder yesterday. Hes running. Hes running.
Snyder, who was recently re-elected to his second term, is a business-oriented and comparatively socially moderate Republican, based on his record in office. A former president and chairman of the board of the computer company Gateway, he won a Republican state primary in 2010 as a first-time candidate and underdog who ran as One Tough Nerd. He now uses the phrase as his Twitter handle.

I guess we can give Snyder credit for destroying Detroit in order to save it.

However, folks should not under estimate Tricky Ricky chances as he is a guy that clearly bankrupted Gateway Computers, have the Local Media cover all that fallout up (in particular how former employees of Gateway Country Stores were locked out of the establishment upon trying to go to work -- however ironically the media video footage to this however -- right around the time Tricky Ricky ran for Governor of Michigan it was "lost" can claim he was a "financial nerd expert", play like he's a "moderate conservative" (whatever that is suppose to mean) and has plenty of money on his own (he is almost a billionaire).
Plus Tricky Ricky, unlike Scottie "I'm Balding" Walker has graduated from the "right school" (University of Michigan Law and Business Schools) -- as he is a J.D. and C.P.A.,will look like a "Genius" with declaring Detroit Bankrupt and appointing "Emergency Managers" damn neither everywhere.
Be aware of Rick Snyder, very aware. It IS a high chance he could be the Republican nominee and that our friends, is DANGEROUS.

(523 posts)Rick Snyder was the 'reasonable' alternative to the bozos running for MI governor in 2010 and he rapidly trashed the underpinnings of my liberal state: removed item pricing (which saved consumers millions), increase taxes on retirees, and signed Right to Steal after saying he was not interested in it, installing the damned unelected 'emergency' managers.
This guys is a smiling, FH, creep, comes to Ann Arbor for the installation of UoM's new president and says how wonderful UoM is, returns to Lansing and cuts funding. At least Walker stabs his state in the chest while Snynder does it in the back.
I find it eerie how Michigan's internal politics have proceeded trends in national politics.

(7,968 posts)I need to issue a warning here. Snyder is dangerous to us. He is more moderate than most of the hard core clowns and actually is a "nice guy". I have trouble with how quickly he caved on the "right to work" legislation which seemed to be slammed through at the end of a republian legislative session a few years ago. Other than that though - this guy is enlighted enough to seem like a dem.
He is personally supportive of LBGT rights though he can't say that because it would get him in trouble with his base. (I know his daughter personally.) He is in support of reasonable enviromental policy and the effort to mitigate the coming CO2 crises. He talks a what appears to be a good game. And from the assumptions that government is best run like a buisness he will attrack a lot of attention. The major problem which I have with him other than signing the right to work law is the R by his name.
He's DANGEROUS to dems. Better that we know this than that we are naive about it.

(7,968 posts)They can't really let any of the current field be the nominee frankly. And again don't underestimate them. They only appear crazy as a party. There are those in that machine who have both intelligence and sanity. Don't underestimate the opponent this cycle. The moment will come when the will realize that they have to win the General. That's when Synder comes into play.
That is what scares me about Synder.

(411 posts)The tax on pensions plus wanting to raise the sales tax just to pay for the disastrous corporate tax break that left MI a billion in the hole. He was clever using michigans pothole roads as an excuse. Most low info michiganders will fall for it.
He did fight for Medicaid expansion by keeping the insurance companies in the loop and he was against doing away with pistol registrations. He also refused to sign the voter ID law because it was too close to the election. Wasn't totally worthless.

(7,006 posts)Instead he is a Ultra-Pro Business Corporate Republican that has some social views not as extreme as the rest of his brethren in the Republican party.
This is the man that signed Right to Work for Less after saying earlier "It Was NOT on his Agenda", dismissed a vote of Michigan's People signing into law P.A. 436 after voters nullified P.A. 4 of 2011 --- the Original Emergency Manager Law, has declared he's going to Split Detroit Public School District into two (Charter and The In Total Debt after 11 years under State of Michigan "Management" Public School Fallout), forced a Bankruptcy in Detroit, cut state Unemployment Benefits from 26 to 20 weeks and have NEVER restored them, ran a state deficit in 2015 of $325 MILLION dollars and another $165 MILLION projected in 2016, cut benefits for the poor with the Department of Human Services (DHS) and on and on...
So STOP IT with this Tricky Ricky is a "Nice Moderate Guy" BS. No, Tricky Ricky is a scam artist of the highest order who knows well how to "play the game" to get what he wants. That is what makes him Dangerous.
Also, Michigan is a cesspool of folks who "Claim" they are Democrat but really will cross any side of the Politico fence to play favors for themselves. Hell, the so-called "Democratic" Governor of Detroit Mike Duggan was the Emcee of Republican Governor Rick Snyder's Inauguration ceremony just in January. You have a former "Democrat" Senator -- Carl Levin -- talking in a commercial supporting the BS called "Proposal 1 of 2015" in Michigan that will raise the sales tax from 6 to 7%, will cost the average Michigan resident between $500-$1400 a year MORE in taxes and it is Rick Snyder -- THE REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR-- that is pushing for this and many so-called "Democrats" are backing him up.
That's Michigan. We are Fudged (pick another "F' word to finish the sentence) Up, seriously!
The moral of this story is Tricky Ricky is just that Tricky however, he will bend with whatever games in the end the Republicans want to play --- but do it AFTER he is in the position of power (I.E. POTUS) to do so. Until then, he will lie and claim he is a "Moderate Republican" and watch out --- those who from Michigan that might partake in this board who will defend Tricky Ricky and their is likely to be some of those folks.

(11,175 posts)You say that he's "personally supportive" of LGBT rights but this is what I read in his Wikipedia bio:
That seems to mean that, even if a liberal city like Ann Arbor wanted to extend health benefits to the same-sex partners of its employees, it would be prohibited from doing so. Such a law goes beyond even the refusal to recognize same-sex marriages -- it can't be defended on the basis of the common right-wing argument that "marriage" is a sacred word that can't be used for same-sex partnerships. (Fortunately, the ACLU sued and the law was struck down.)
If "personally supportive" means that he privately thought this bill was stupid but he went along with it anyway to pander to the base, then he doesn't seem like a Democrat.
exactly! This guy will do what the party bosses want him to do.

(11,175 posts)He has stood up to the fundies on at least one social issue, by calling for expansion of Michigan's anti-discrimination law to include LGBT protections. He's even tied it to their latest pet cause, state laws called "Religious Freedom Restoration Act":
from
"Michigan governor vows to veto religious freedom bill unless civil rights are protected"
This does mean, however, that he's immediately toast with a big chunk of the Republican primary electorate.

(15,540 posts)I totally agree with you. This guy is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Comes off as a "nice guy" and "geeky nerd" in his speeches and then turns around and does exactly what rich, white Repugs like to do - look out for their own. Didn't he give some of his administration huge raises? Let's not forget the emergency manager debacle where they talked about selling off the art at the DIA to pay bills. Now he wants the taxpayers to pay to fix the roads.
Do NOT believe anything this guy says. The reason he's dangerous is because he puts on a good show. He got many, many Dems to vote for him (I know some personally who did and I was shocked.) Shortly afterwards he set out to destroy the middle class and unions.
