The Omaha police officer injured Wednesday in a shooting in the Florence area has died, becoming the first female officer in the department killed in the line of duty.
Kerrie Orozco, 29, had been taken to Creighton University Medical Center in extremely critical condition after being shot about 1 p.m. near Read Street and Martin Avenue.
Omaha police had responded to a Help an officer call at 30th Street and Martin Avenue.
Officers from the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force were serving a felony arrest warrant about 12:55 p.m., said Deputy Police Chief Dave Baker. During the process of serving the warrant, shots were fired, he said. Orozco and the suspect, Marcus D. Wheeler, 26, were taken to the Creighton hospital in extremely critical condition, with CPR in progress.

Kerrie Orozco married Hector Orozco Lopez in April 2011. She had two stepchildren, 8-year-old Natalia and a stepson, Santiago, who is 6. Daughter Olivia Ruth was born Feb. 17.

Marcus D. Wheeler, a 26-year-old man wanted in a September shooting, was the suspect shot and killed Wednesday in a shootout with the Metro Area Task Force, law enforcement officials said.
A female police officer was critically injured in the incident, which occurred about 1 p.m. She was transported to Creighton University Medical Center.
Police had been unable to find Wheeler for months and told the public last year to consider Wheeler armed and dangerous.
Omaha police had been seeking Wheeler in connection with the Sept. 5 shooting of Antonio Martin near 60th Street and Curtis Avenue.

When I was hurt on the job in the Omaha Public Works Dept I could no longer do the required heavy lifting. I was facing a disability or reduced early retirement. I was extremely lucky to land a uniformed civilian position at the OPD front desk. The dept. let me stay even after I was diagnosed with FTD until I could retire. I was there 2 years and 4 months.
I bumped into Officer Orozco a few times.
Officer Orozco gave birth in February. She worked in the gang unit. She was very popular and will be missed.

Your whole department must be devastated.
As little comfort as it can give, they know she died a hero. She was doing something she obviously loved to do, protect the people.
