Former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley announced during a rally this morning that he will seek the 2016 Democratic nomination for the presidency.

"The American Dream we share, its powerful history, its current condition, and most importantly, its urgent need for rebuilding," he continued. . .

We have Bernie, Hillary and O'Malley. Three very credible candidates. The GOP has a way overpacked Hollyweird Squares clown car.

(13,305 posts)But I'm glad to have another person running. The more the better, especially since unlike the GOP field ours won't be a race to pander to the lowest common denominator.

(65,180 posts)He also had a tough on crime policy in Baltimore, but is against the death penalty. So not conservative - he's not the reliable progressive Sanders is, but likely is left of Clinton.

(45,524 posts)He said Colorado and Washington are providing info on the effects and that he didn't want MD to be a test case.
He did sign legislation that allows the police to write citations for marijuana possession instead of making arrests.
Hardly conservative positions.

(65,180 posts)Compared to some other Dems, he is not so liberal on it. But he is good on most things.

(297,528 posts)but, it won't. Their cheap ignorant shots in the name of Bernie does him no good.

(13,305 posts)Looking at his positions it seems he's slightly more liberal than Hillary. I realize that's not saying a whole hell of a lot, but I didn't see anything in the quick look I did that would make me go "Ugh" other than thinking Nuclear Iran is the biggest threat to world peace or something to that effect (but at the same time saying he supported the presidents deal).
Sounds to me like he's not Bernie or Elizabeth, but also not Hillary (which at this point is one of my main criteria in a candidate).

(45,524 posts)Martin O'Malley:
1. Ended death penalty in Maryland
2. Prevented fracking in Maryland and put regulations in the way to prevent next GOP Gov Hogan from easily allowing fracking.
3. Provided health insurance for 380,000
4. Reduced infant mortality to an all time low.
5. Provided meals to thousands of hungry children and moved toward a goal for eradicating childhood hunger.
6. Enacted a $10.10 living wage and a $11. minimum wage for State workers.
7. Supporter the Dream Act
8. Cut income taxes for 86% of Marylanders (raised taxes on the rich).
9. Reformed Marylands tax code to make it more progressive.
10. Enacted some of the nations most comprehensive reforms to protect homeowners from foreclosure.
There is a lot more, but I'll only add that Mother Jones magazine called him the best candidate on environmental issues.
