Arrest made in case of dog found with muzzle taped shut

North Charleston police have arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with the animal cruelty case of Caitlyn, the dog that was found with her mouth taped shut.

William Leonard Dodson, of Quitman Street in North Charleston, was arrested Monday night in the area of Quitman and Calvert streets, and charged with ill treatment of animals-torture, according to police spokesman Spencer Pryor.

A 15-month-old chocolate Staffordshire called Caityln was found Wednesday in the Chicora neighborhood in North Charleston. Black electrical tape was wound tightly around her snout, trapping her tongue between her teeth for perhaps several days. Her plight went viral and drew sympathy and outrage around the world.

She has been recovering in the care of the Charleston Animal Society, which offered a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for taping her muzzle. The Humane Society of the United States also offered a $5,000 reward.

we are currently feeding about 80-plus% of many of the crops we grow in the world to farm animals. So by eating animal products, you are actually causing the “death” of even more plants (to say nothing of animals), since we feed a disproportionate amount of plant foods to animals, relative to what they yield to humans in the form of food.
So if your argument is for the plants, you must go vegan. And no I'm not an authoritarian for wanting to save animals.

Anyone who would purposely do this to a helpless animal is, IMHO, on their way to becoming a serial killer.
Most serial killers start out by torturing and killing animals, then graduate to humans, not saying this guy did this, he has yet to be tried, but just saying that serial killers get their start on animals.

Glad this beautiful dog was rescued and she will have a good life for the rest of her life.

Not necessarily serial killer as that is tied to animal cruelty in childhood. But a person who would do this to an animal will hurt a person, and likely a vulnerable/physically smaller person like a senior, a woman, or a child. Animal abuse is discounted far too much. It is a giant red flag and reprehensible in its own right.

who says they were financially hard up and sold her dirt cheap to the scumbag a couple days before she showed up like this.

She found her way back home to their porch -- when husband was headed out to work, she was waiting for them like this.

People need to learn that when you sell your dog or cat for a few dollars on craigs list or wherever, the odds are very high that they are going to end up in a very bad way. I won't be the least bit surprised if an investigation turns up a dog fighting ring.

Better to work with a rescue or no-kill shelter to either get financial aid or foster home...

Yesterday I read several articles that made it seem like she had found her way back to her original owner, but that was not the case.

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150602/PC16/150609882

"Affidavit: Caitlyn abuse suspect laughed after he taped dog’s mouth shut

According to court records released Tuesday, a woman sold a dog named Diamond to Dodson on May 25 for $20. The next night, Dodson told the woman he had taped the dog’s mouth shut because he was tired of her barking, and the dog got loose from her chain. The woman said Dodson was laughing about it, according to the affidavit. She knew Dodson and identified him from a photo lineup.

The dog was found the following day in the Chicora neighborhood in North Charleston.

Caitlyn lost some of her upper lip and the tip of her tongue but has been recovering, according to Aldwin Roman, the Charleston Animal Society’s anti-cruelty and outreach director. It’s possible she may be able to lap up water without reconstructive surgery, he said."

Dog Found With Muzzle Taped Shut out of Surgery
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jun 4, 2015, 3:01 AM ET

Associated Press

Officials say the surgery on Caitlyn, the dog who was severely injured after her muzzle was taped shut, took a little longer than expected, but the surgeon is optimistic about her recovery.

The Post and Courier of Charleston (http://bit.ly/1HLhTW5) reports the surgery was performed at Veterinary Specialty Care in Mount Pleasant Tuesday. A spokeswoman says Caitlyn had her lip and cheek reconstructed, but only lost minimal function of her tongue.

Caitlyn, a stray 15-month-old chocolate Staffordshire mix, showed up at a home last Wednesday with her mouth tightly bound with black electrical tape.

Authorities say 41-year-old William Leonard Dodson of North Charleston was arrested Monday night and charged with ill treatment of animals. He remains in Charleston County Jail. It was not clear if he has an attorney.

Caitlyn dog recovery update: Stray dog’s miracle story after muzzle taped shut
June 5, 2015
12:27 AM MST

The Caitlyn dog recovery update and live feed is a miracle story for many dog lovers who have followed Caitlyn’s story and hope for a recovery. Caitlyn, the stray abused pit bull mix whose muzzle was cruelly taped shut with electrical tape for days, is out of reconstructive surgery and is doing well, reports WCIV North Charleston on June 4.

Caitlyn’s amazing dog recovery is surprising even to veterinarians who feared that the abused 15-month-old pup would be losing more of her tongue than they actually had to take out. During a 2-hour surgery on Wednesday, veterinarians at Veterinary Specialty Care in Mount Pleasant did have to reconstruct Caitlyn’s jaw and take out the dead tissue in her lip and her tongue, but it was much less than expected.

“Her tongue was in way better condition that we anticipated. It was initially assessed that we would lose about a third of her tongue, and we sort of revised that estimate to a fourth, but I don’t think she lost an eighth of it,” said veterinarian Henri Bianucci.

Last week, the 15-month-old chocolate Staffordshire pit bull terrier mix was found in Charleston County, South Carolina. Caitlyn’s muzzle had been wrapped tightly with a thin strip of electrical tape and it had trapped her tongue between her teeth cutting off her blood flow. When Caitlyn was found, a compassionate dog owner called 911 and reported the horrific abuse:

“I have a dog that’s here at my house that I found and the dog’s mouth is taped shut with electrical tape, tongue hanging out its mouth, bleeding, and his tongue is completely black. I just don’t know what to do.”
