North Charleston police have arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with the animal cruelty case of Caitlyn, the dog that was found with her mouth taped shut.
William Leonard Dodson, of Quitman Street in North Charleston, was arrested Monday night in the area of Quitman and Calvert streets, and charged with ill treatment of animals-torture, according to police spokesman Spencer Pryor.
A 15-month-old chocolate Staffordshire called Caityln was found Wednesday in the Chicora neighborhood in North Charleston. Black electrical tape was wound tightly around her snout, trapping her tongue between her teeth for perhaps several days. Her plight went viral and drew sympathy and outrage around the world.
She has been recovering in the care of the Charleston Animal Society, which offered a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for taping her muzzle. The Humane Society of the United States also offered a $5,000 reward.

You may oppose using animals as food, that's your right and you're welcome to it, however, the vast majority of Americans are omnivores and that won't change any time soon, if ever.
BTW, this thread isn't about the pros or cons of killing animals for food, it's about someone taping shut the mouth of a dog and the arrest of a suspect.
chernabog
(480 posts)When you think animals are meat to be harvested, how is that not cruel?
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)We kill our livestock and wild game quite humanely and enjoy the fruits of our labors, as do those that are less fortunate.

See, my opinion is just as valid as yours.
Anyways, have to go out and do battle with our cattle and other livestock, owning a farm is not an easy chore.
Have a good day.
chernabog
(480 posts)The animal shouldn't have to die just because you have the desire to taste its dead body.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)So I should have to eat it alive?
Tell me, do you eat plants? If so, aren't you killing a living thing so you can eat?
Wouldn't that make you a hypocrite?
chernabog
(480 posts)A plant is not an animal, has no central nervous system. Many plants and fruits depend on animals to eat them so they can spread and grow more. The only hypocrite here is you, claiming to care about this dog from the story, yet you go ahead and kill other animals and it doesn't phase you one bit.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)That makes you a hypocrite and an authoritarian for telling others how they should live.
BTW, it's faze, not phase.
Regardless, I will continue to eat meat, I will continue to hunt for meat, I will continue to donate what I don't need to the less fortunate among us, who are damned glad to have that meat to eat, so take your haughty, high horse crap and tell it to someone who cares.
Oh, wait, you think I care what you think of me?
You couldn't be more wrong.
chernabog
(480 posts)we are currently feeding about 80-plus% of many of the crops we grow in the world to farm animals. So by eating animal products, you are actually causing the death of even more plants (to say nothing of animals), since we feed a disproportionate amount of plant foods to animals, relative to what they yield to humans in the form of food.
So if your argument is for the plants, you must go vegan. And no I'm not an authoritarian for wanting to save animals.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)And you are an authoritarian for trying to tell others how to live their lives.
I, like the majority of Americans, will continue to eat meat, I will continue to hunt for meat, nothing you say or do will change that.
Enjoy killing plants so you can eat.
chernabog
(480 posts)Could one consider you a murderer for killing sentient beings?
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)Only authoritarian types would consider this murder.
Jeez, you sound just like one of those PITA idiots.
chernabog
(480 posts)"favoring or enforcing strict obedience to authority, especially that of the government, at the expense of personal freedom."
Your decision to kill sentient beings is not a personal one, since it involves the life of that being that can feel pain and loss. So no, I'm not being authoritarian. Are you ok with the fact that Americans once owned slaves? Are you mad that the authoritarian government put a stop to the personal decision of owning slaves?
Stepped off the deep end didn't you?
chernabog
(480 posts)I think I make a valid argument.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)I said you were killing plants, there is a HUGE difference between murder and killing.
Murder is a crime.
chernabog
(480 posts)A plant and literally killing a sentient being that can feel pain.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)When you pull a plant, cut down a plant, etc, it dies, does it not?
Ergo, you are killing a living being to feed you.
chernabog
(480 posts)Plus, plants don't have a central nervous system, aren't sentient and can't feel pain.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)and when you pull a plant by it's roots, it most certainly doesn't grow back.
Now, if you pull a plant by it's roots, does it or doesn't it die? Are you or are you not killing living beings to feed yourself?
chernabog
(480 posts)One does not need to eat a sentient being to do so.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)Need has nothing to do with it, it's called choice, and I and the majority of Americans, hell, probably the world's population, chose to eat meat, you want to be vegan, fine, great, fantastic, but don't lecture others on their eating habits.
chernabog
(480 posts)but much less than a meat eater. When you kill a sentient being, that is not a personal choice. Why choose to kill a sentient being?
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)I personally choose to eat meat, for that to happen, an animal has to die, I am comfortable with my choice.
chernabog
(480 posts)these are personal choices:
dying your hair green or purple
playing football instead of tennis
eating 10 bananas in one sitting
going swimming
these are not personal choices:
eating meat
eating fish
eating dairy
it stops being a personal choice when the lives of millions of sentient beings are affected
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)Do you realize how stupid that sounds?
chernabog
(480 posts)You have no argument, just that it sounds stupid. Try thinking progressively.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)How is my choosing to eat meat not a personal choice?

chernabog
(480 posts)I'm not gonna mind my own business .
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)is none of your business.
And just what injustice and oppression do you see by eating meat?
chernabog
(480 posts)The killing of sentient beings for ones own pleasure.
The oppression is the keeping and using of those sentient beings; they are not free to be animals. You won't let them live their lives free and naturally.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)Well, you've really jumped the shark.
chernabog
(480 posts)Time for you to accept the progressive view and move on with a more peaceful life, one where you don't kill animals for no good reason.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)I'm quite comfortable with my lifestyle.
I don't kill animals for no good reason, my reason is quite good, they feed me and my wife.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)of progressive.
chernabog

chernabog
(480 posts)GGJohn
(9,951 posts)I highly doubt you can guarantee that, but I'll give you the chance to prove it, how about a link?
And even IF it were true, what does that have to do with the conversation?
chernabog
(480 posts)And have a greater social awareness.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)That means that most progressives don't eat meat?
So, where's your link proving that?
chernabog
(480 posts)I did say however that all ethical vegans are progressive.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)So, do you agree that most progressives are meat eaters?
chernabog

GGJohn
(9,951 posts)Anyone who would purposely do this to a helpless animal is, IMHO, on their way to becoming a serial killer.
Most serial killers start out by torturing and killing animals, then graduate to humans, not saying this guy did this, he has yet to be tried, but just saying that serial killers get their start on animals.
Glad this beautiful dog was rescued and she will have a good life for the rest of her life.
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)Not necessarily serial killer as that is tied to animal cruelty in childhood. But a person who would do this to an animal will hurt a person, and likely a vulnerable/physically smaller person like a senior, a woman, or a child. Animal abuse is discounted far too much. "Affidavit: Caitlyn abuse suspect laughed after he taped dogs mouth shut
According to court records released Tuesday, a woman sold a dog named Diamond to Dodson on May 25 for $20. The next night, Dodson told the woman he had taped the dogs mouth shut because he was tired of her barking, and the dog got loose from her chain. The woman said Dodson was laughing about it, according to the affidavit. She knew Dodson and identified him from a photo lineup.
The dog was found the following day in the Chicora neighborhood in North Charleston.
Caitlyn lost some of her upper lip and the tip of her tongue but has been recovering, according to Aldwin Roman, the Charleston Animal Societys anti-cruelty and outreach director. Its possible she may be able to lap up water without reconstructive surgery, he said."

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. Jun 4, 2015, 3:01 AM ET

Officials say the surgery on Caitlyn, the dog who was severely injured after her muzzle was taped shut, took a little longer than expected, but the surgeon is optimistic about her recovery.
The Post and Courier of Charleston (http://bit.ly/1HLhTW5) reports the surgery was performed at Veterinary Specialty Care in Mount Pleasant Tuesday. A spokeswoman says Caitlyn had her lip and cheek reconstructed, but only lost minimal function of her tongue.
Caitlyn, a stray 15-month-old chocolate Staffordshire mix, showed up at a home last Wednesday with her mouth tightly bound with black electrical tape.
Authorities say 41-year-old William Leonard Dodson of North Charleston was arrested Monday night and charged with ill treatment of animals. He remains in Charleston County Jail. It was not clear if he has an attorney.

(160,627 posts)Caitlyn dog recovery update: Stray dogs miracle story after muzzle taped shut
June 5, 2015
12:27 AM MST
The Caitlyn dog recovery update and live feed is a miracle story for many dog lovers who have followed Caitlyns story and hope for a recovery. Caitlyn, the stray abused pit bull mix whose muzzle was cruelly taped shut with electrical tape for days, is out of reconstructive surgery and is doing well, reports WCIV North Charleston on June 4.
Caitlyns amazing dog recovery is surprising even to veterinarians who feared that the abused 15-month-old pup would be losing more of her tongue than they actually had to take out. During a 2-hour surgery on Wednesday, veterinarians at Veterinary Specialty Care in Mount Pleasant did have to reconstruct Caitlyns jaw and take out the dead tissue in her lip and her tongue, but it was much less than expected.
Her tongue was in way better condition that we anticipated. It was initially assessed that we would lose about a third of her tongue, and we sort of revised that estimate to a fourth, but I dont think she lost an eighth of it, said veterinarian Henri Bianucci.
Last week, the 15-month-old chocolate Staffordshire pit bull terrier mix was found in Charleston County, South Carolina. Caitlyns muzzle had been wrapped tightly with a thin strip of electrical tape and it had trapped her tongue between her teeth cutting off her blood flow. When Caitlyn was found, a compassionate dog owner called 911 and reported the horrific abuse:
I have a dog thats here at my house that I found and the dogs mouth is taped shut with electrical tape, tongue hanging out its mouth, bleeding, and his tongue is completely black. I just dont know what to do.
