Hillary Clinton: It’s time to face ‘hard truths’ about race, guns, violence

Source: Politico

Hillary Clinton said the tragic mass shooting in a Charleston, S.C. church Wednesday night should open up a national conversation about the “hard truths” concerning race, violence, guns and division in America.

“How many people do we need to see cut down before we act? “she asked, speaking to a group of Latino elected officials in Las Vegas Thursday.

...snip...

In her 30-minute speech to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, Clinton also reiterated many of the stances she has outlined already on the campaign trail and in her kickoff speech last Saturday.

She pledged her commitment to investing in early childhood education; working to lift “the crushing burden of student debt;” supporting paid family leave; and fighting for early voting and universal automatic registration when an American citizen turns 18.

If not, then how about giving Hillary time to come up with a plan. I know for a fact there is one in the works.

Senator Sanders

Charleston Church Shooting Sen. Bernie Sanders called the shooting of nine people at a prayer meeting in Charleston, South Carolina, a "horrific reminder" that racism still exists in the United States, The Associated Press, CBS News, Newsweek and The Guardian reported. Sanders postponed a trip to Charleston planned for Sunday and urged supporters to donate to the Emanuel AME Church, The (Charleston) Post and Courier and MSNBC reported. Guns Missing from Sanders response was any call for gun control, Policy Mic noted. Sen. Sanders is a liberal standard bearer on nearly every issue except gun control, according to Politico. Sanders' gun votes put him "in line with his home state's political norms," Rolling Stone said. The NRA has given Sanders D- and F grades. MSNBC's Steve Benen noted that "it's important to realize that Vermont has some of the most lax gun laws in the nation, in large part because gun violence in the Green Mountain State is so low." Democrats “with the exception of Bernie Sanders” are unified on gun violence, Democratic operative Stephanie Cutter said on “Morning Joe” on MSNBC. LINK LINK, VIDEO

Also:

In 2005, he voted to shield manufacturers from lawsuits brought by victims of gun violence. Consumers injured by dangerous products regularly bring similar lawsuits against other kinds of manufacturers. The firearms industry, along with the NRA and other gun-rights groups, argued that manufacturers shouldn't be held responsible for the actions of violent criminals with guns. Congress agreed, preventing victims from suing firearms makers.

My comment: I agree. If it is legal to sell them, after the sale the responsibility falls to the gun owner to use it and protect it securely.

Sanders has also voted against forcing states to respect concealed-carry permits issued by other states.

My comment: I also agree!

Yet while he has been a supporter of gun rights, he has also taken plenty of criticism from Second Amendment groups for his positions in favor of other gun-control measures. He's consistently supported a ban on assault weapons. After the massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., in 2012, Sanders reversed his position on the Brady Bill the next year and voted to expand background checks.

My comment: Bernie is a reasonable man. Presented with new information he will change his opinion.

There is not a single candidate in the Republican clown car that will even mention this as a "generality".

Still 17 months to election. Let's see what specific acts she will propose.

Every proposal she has will make this country more Democratic and will help lead us out of this darkness.
