Saudi, Russia sign nuclear deal

Both Russia and Saudi Arabia signed an inter-governmental agreement on Thursday on cooperation in nuclear energy for peaceful purposes during the International Economic Forum here.

For the first time in the history of relations between Moscow and Riyadh, both countries have laid the legal basis for activities related to nuclear energy.

Meanwhile, Saudi Defence Minister Mohamed bin Salman conveyed on Thursday a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz has accepted the invitation to visit Russia.

Similarly, the Saudi king extended an invitation to Putin to visit the Arab country, which Putin also accepted.

Saudi, Russia sign nuclear deal

Saudi Arabia on Thursday signed six agreements with Russia including the peaceful use of nuclear technology, Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

The news comes after Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Konstantin Palace in St. Petersburg on Thursday after arriving in Moscow late Wednesday in an official visit, the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Meanwhile, two sources told Reuters that the oil ministers of Russia and Saudi Arabia plan to discuss a broad cooperation agreement on Thursday at an economic forum in St Petersburg.

Russia and Saudi Arabia on Thursday signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Riyadh has expressed concern over the anticipated nuclear deal with Iran, Saudi Arabia's main geopolitical rival, due to be finalized by July 1. The Saudi royal family began considering pursuing its own nuclear weapons in the wake of an April 2 framework deal with six world powers.

Following Tehran's agreement with international mediators, reports emerged in May that Saudi Arabia was in talks with Pakistan to purchase its "off-the-shelf" nuclear weapons. A Saudi defense official later dismissed them as "rumors and speculation."

Saudi Arabian and Russian officials took part in a series of high-level talks this month, something which analysts say raises questions about a possible new alliance between Saudi Arabia and Russia -- a close American ally and its old, and re-emerging, geopolitical foe. A close relationship between Riyadh and Moscow also could hinder U.S. and European efforts to punish Russia with economic sanctions for its intervention in Ukraine.

The two countries’ oil ministers met Thursday in St. Petersburg to discuss a broad cooperation agreement. The Al Arabiya News Channel reported that Saudi Arabia and Russia also signed six agreements about the peaceful use of nuclear technology. The deal came hours after Muhammad bin Salman, the Saudi deputy crown prince and defense minister, met President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.

This week's talks between Saudi Arabia and Russia come after several other communications between Putin and the prince’s father, King Salman. The two leaders spoke by phone in April, and on May 27, a Russian special envoy met with the king the day before the new Saudi ambassador presented his credentials in Moscow.

Russia is largely aligned with Iran, Saudi Arabia's political archrival in the Middle East. Any cooperation or partnership between Russia and Saudi Arabia could tip the scales in the wars in Iraq, where Iran is backing Shiite militias fighting the Islamic State group, and in Syria, where Iran is aiding President Bashar Assad's military.

They may sell a reactor or two but no weapons - especially to Saudi Arabia which has funded Chechen rebels via Pakistan.

This agreement is just show -- Putin showing off to Obama and Salman showing off to Iran.
