Roof, 21, has told police that he "almost didn't go through with it because everyone was so nice to him," sources told NBC News.

Dylann Roof, the man who gunned down nine parishioners at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, has been charged with nine counts of murder and a weapons possession charge, police said.

Roof confessed to the horrific killings at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston on Wednesday night, two sources confirmed to NBC News.

Do you suppose he'd ever gone to a black church before? I doubt it, but it will
be interesting to find out. Do you suppose he had any black friends? I doubt it.
I wonder if he ever worked with any black co-workers. Probably not. Or had
a black supervisor?

He was carefully taught to hate and even when he was surrounded with love and acceptance,
he couldn't overcome that carefully taught message.

It's sad. Very, very sad.

And I'm not saying they're not viable suppositions - but at this point, that's all they are. Let's have the details come to light before we write the diagnosis.

Dylan could turn out to be a non-loved individual who concluded the best way to get attention was to make himself glaringly visible. Hmmmmm.... let's see - mass murder ought to be JUST the ticket! Then people will pay attention to me. The Moe haircut hasn't worked like I thought it would, so it's time to ramp things up a bit. I'll say I was hoping to incite widespread violence - a race war, in fact. If it works, I'll be a hero. If it doesn't, I'll still get lots of attention.

I guess what I'm saying is - it can be strictly a matter of hate, but it can also be a matter of social dysfunction - or a mix thereof. But "carefully taught to hate"? - I think that's a bit of a stretch.

poor dylaan..he could turn out to be the victim in all this. What did he say while killing those innocent people? No stretch, since he was an avowed racist long before he committed this heinous act of racism...oh sorry dylaan is the victim here... Next generation of racists coming along at a rabid pace...but that isn't true is it?

But you know what I meant. Yet rather than assessing it rationally, it's better to do this . I'm not saying that outrage about this slaughter warranted - what I AM saying is this young man is sick because he's a societal misfit. And he likely didn't slide out of his mom's womb all programmed to do evil.
The nine folks he shot are the ultimate victims. Roof is the culmination of horrific catalyst influences - but you are the one who brought the word victim to his defense - not me. We (for ALL our self-assigned smarts) are an F'd up species. Look at the avatar on your posts. I spent time there too - voluntarily, no less. What did we gain from that stupid foray? I now get to wear denim shorts that are made there - instead of here - is that my reward? What does this have to do with Dylan? We were there because of flawed ideals and goals. And there - there were only what - about 50K Americans blown away for nothing? We're a species cursed with a thinking, perceptive brain. And sadly, that organ doesn't perform in the most ideal way - like shooting innocent people because your formative years were dominated by sour influences.
What I said before was that Mr. Roof didn't just come fresh out of the package - age 21 - programmed with racist ideas and brandishing a .45 automatic. There was an ugly road that brought him to Tuesday night. And it wasn't all on his shoulders alone.

I DO have a grip on what's what here. I was one of the first to predict that the NRA's comment was that the victims are to blame because they weren't armed. And to think............... those NRA folks have brains that are technically, just like everyone else's!

No one comes out the womb evil, I think. Yet a new generation is coming along with the same hates that I dealt with in their parents. What does that say about generational unreasoning or flawed reasoning about white privilege and the threat POC's represent to that privilege? Everything about the staying power of racial hate and animosity in american culture. IF it was getting better, I wouldn't have a leg to stand on, it's not, and given the current climate, I better keep standing on the two I have. Rw hate on television news and radio/internet helped roof make up his mind to murder as well as the racist culture he lives in, social misfit or not. I feel there are a lot of his type of social misfits out there just trying to get up the nerve to do just what roof did or maybe even worse. That's what concerns me. Not this "lone wolf", "mentally ill" garbage.

I agree with most of your comments about our species and sometimes because we're so F'd up, that does cloud my reason. Thanks, I went over the edge a bit. Yet this garbage is getting old. I'm fed up to the gills with this unreasoning hate. By the way, I 1049'd there myself...and agree with every word about the outcome.

anything, until they put him in General Population in prison. Although, he probably will be protected while there waiting for execution IF he is given the death penalty. Wouldn't want to deny nikki and the group their joy at being able to wash their hands of the whole racist mess, with a, "see we killed him, no more racist".

according to some reports I've seen, was a person who went to that web site regularly. To me, because that site claims 300000 strong visitors, it means that there are 300000 more roofs waiting for their chance to protect white privilege in america. That's all I meant. Sorry it wasn't clear.....even if there aren't 300000 at that site I'd bet my last dollar there is that many here in our beloved america and no doubt, many, many more.

It is sad to say that our churches are still horribly racially segregated. Even the more "liberal" christian denominations are this way.

There are some fantastic congregations locally that certainly aren't that diverse but have demonstrated time and again that they are welcoming to all people - irrespective of skin tone or national origin. I'm sure that's the case in Charleston as well.
