Police: Black man shot by officers has died, was unarmed

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — An unarmed black man was fatally shot Thursday by officers who thought he had a weapon when they were called to a home from which he was barred by protective order, police said.

Spencer Lee McCain, 41, was shot about 1 a.m. at the condominium in Owings Mills while a woman who said he threatened to beat her was there with her two young children, Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson said at a news conference.

Three officers were on the scene, and all fired as McCain was in a "defensive position," Johnson said. He said the officers thought he had a weapon, but none was found. Two of the officers are white, and one is black, police said. All are on administrative leave.

Johnson said 19 casings were found at the scene, but it wasn't clear how many times McCain was hit.

12. I'd have to see the situation see for myself

as far as when the cops arrived -- the part about they thought he had a weapon but it turns out he didn't bugs me. I can see tempers stilling flaring but exactly what they showed up. A decent chance he was continuing to present a threat to either the woman but need more info -- a video would help. Right or wrong I expect cops to dress at a report after the basic dispatch details.

19. I have no problem with this...

as it appears as a suicide by cop. What I have the problem with is when they approach somebody that just killed 9 people, and they know he is armed, and they almost forget to put the handcuffs on him. If you don't think cops treat white and black suspects different then you aren't paying attention to reality.

he had an order to stay from her and he didnt and she was afraid and called the cops and well.............shit happens.
