At least 113 people dead in Indonesian military plane crash: air force

Source: i24

All 113 on board an Indonesian air force transport plane that crashed Tuesday into a major city on Sumatra are believed to have been killed, the country's air force chief said.

There were 12 crew and 101 passengers on the Hercules C-130 when it went down and burst into flames in a residential area of Medan city, Agus Supriatna told AFP.

Asked if he believed anyone had survived, he said: "No, no. No survivors. I just returned from the site." He said that 49 bodies had so far been recovered and taken to hospital.

Buildings were left in ruins and cars reduced to flaming wrecks after the plane came down in Medan, a city of two million.

More than 110 people were killed after a military plane crashed into a densely-populated neighborhood in Indonesia on Tuesday, a senior official told NBC News.

Air Marshal Agus Supriatna said the C-130B Hercules aircraft was carrying 12 crew and 101 passengers, many of them military family members who were travelling on the Indonesian air force planes. It crashed into a hotel and homes in the northern Sumatran city of Medan.

No one on board the plane survived, according Supriatna, although he said officials were still unsure about the number of victims on the ground.

The doomed aircraft was built in 1964 and had just taken off from a nearby air force base. It was on its way to Tanjung Pinang, a city in the in Riau Islands off Sumatra, when it ran into trouble.

The B model was built from 1959 to 1962. It takes a lot of time and money to keep old aircraft like that flying safely.
