CINCINNATI Officials are expected to award a contract to the streetcar operator option not favored by the transit union, but at a cost lower than budgeted, during a meeting Monday morning.
If approved by the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA), Transdev Services will operate Cincinnatis streetcar system for at least five years, and as many as 10 years on an optional contract extension, for as much as $38 million over the 10 years, SORTA announced Thursday.
Under the contract, Transdev would be responsible for all management, operations and maintenance personnel. After $1.1 million in start-up costs, the first year of operation under Transdev is expected to cost $3.27 million. Along with the city's and SORTA's shares of the costs, running the streetcar is expected to cost just over $4 million for the first year of operations. The city of Cincinnati, responsible for funding operations of the streetcar, was expecting to spend $4.2 million annually.
The announcement came after a judge denied a request from Amalgamated Transit Union Local 627 to issue a restraining order preventing SORTA from awarding a contract without the consent of Cincinnati City Council.
