JERUSALEM, July 3 (Reuters) - Militants fired a rocket into southern Israel on Friday, the Israeli military said, causing no casualties, and media reports said the rocket was fired from Sinai.

Israeli Army Radio said the rocket was fired from the Sinai peninsula, where Egyptian forces have fought fierce battles with Islamic State in the past few days.

The Israeli military, however, said it was still checking whether the rocket was fired from Sinai or the Gaza Strip.

Egyptian security sources told Reuters they were investigating the reports and said there was no immediate evidence a rocket was launched from Egyptian territory.

ISIS in Egypt claims rocket attack on Israel

Militants of the Sinai Province group, which is affiliated to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), said on Friday the group had launched three Grad rockets towards "occupied Palestine".

"Three Grad rockets were fired at Jewish positions in occupied Palestine," the group said in a statement posted on Twitter by supporters.

Israeli police said earlier they had found rocket remnants in an open area. No damage or casualties resulted.

"Yes, the rocket was fired from Sinai," an Israeli military source said, confirming an Israeli Army Radio report that the missile was launched from the desert region bordering Israel and Gaza.
