Cliven Bundy says Rand Paul promised to make Nevada a ‘sovereign state’ if he’s elected president
Source: RawStory/KNPR-FM
offlaw rancher Cliven Bundy said he met with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) for nearly an hour this week and found he sees eye to eye with the GOP presidential candidate.
Bundy, whose ongoing dispute over grazing rights on federally owned land sparked an armed militia standoff last year with the Bureau of Land Management, said Paul assured him he would grant the ranchers demands and make Nevada a sovereign state if elected next year to the White House.
He said, One of your biggest problems is getting Nevada to recognize its sovereignty and to stand up for its sovereignty, Bundy told KNPR-FM. He said he would turn over the jurisdiction authority and allow the state of Nevada to act like a sovereign state. He said it would be up to we the people to govern ourselves.
Bundy, who views often square with the far-right sovereign citizen and posse comitatus movements, has said he would be willing to pay the $1 million he owes for grazing his cattle on public land to Nevada but not to the federal government, whose authority he does not recognize.

(19,926 posts)I think some play the same game when they post pro-corporate stuff. They can point to this site to show how 'liberal' centrists are. I suspect that's why so many centrists on here try to self identify as liberal, trying to change the definition and move the goal post on what is accepted as 'liberal'.

(3,425 posts)However, I think that if the red states were able to secede, there would be a natural (and unfortunate) culling of the herd as most red states receive more federal money that they give.
Realistically, secession of red states is never going to happen. What we need is a law that allows states to receive federal dollars similar to the amount they contribute. Also not going to happen, but it is fun thinking about it.

(1,727 posts)There is no "dispute" about grazing fees. He's been grazing his cattle on Federal lands that are maintained by the BLS for decades without paying like every other rancher who grazes his livestock on property that he doesn't own does. The grazing fees that the federal government charges ranchers are significantly lower than what private land owners charge for other parties to graze on their land, so in reality, the federal grazing fees are yet another subsidy for farmers/ranchers.
Bundy is a parasitic freeloader who was stealing from the Federal government and threatened to murder federal officials and law enforcement personnel after the BLS tried to put an end his nonsense.
Yet somehow, according to all of the Conservatives who claim to hate freeloaders, he's a hero, and the people who are protesting police brutality are anti-cop thugs.

Historic NY
(37,449 posts)A second convention to write a state constitution therefore met from July 427, 1864. The defeated 1863 constitution was used as the basis for the new document. The requirements of the congressional enabling act were duly incorporated at the beginning of the constitution in a section called "The Ordinance." This included the outlawing of slavery, and the statement that all undistributed public lands would be retained by the federal government and could never be taxed by the state. These provisions would be "irrevocable" without the consent of Congress and of the people of Nevada. The new constitution also included a "paramount allegiance" clause, proclaiming the supremacy of the United States government over the states and that no state had the right to secede, both very much Republican party doctrine, and voluntarily inserted into the document by its makers. The 1864 constitution also espoused democratic principles, popular in the West, with popular elections demanded for many state offices, including the state judiciary. Possible opposition from mine owners was headed off by a provision stating that only the net proceeds of mines could be taxed.

(2,810 posts)Rand Paul probably pledged to give federal land to Nevada. Though who knows if Nevada even wants the land, since it would then be maintained by Nevada taxpayers alone instead of all US taxpayers.
