Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore plans presidential run

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore will announce a run for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination next month.
Gilmore said in a phone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press that he plans to announce his candidacy in the first week of August.
Gilmore, who finished his one term as governor in 2002, said his record as a national security expert and a fiscal conservative will help set him apart in a crowded Republican field.
He will likely be the 17th declared Republican candidate.

(23,156 posts)I will say that I know absolutely nothing about this man, and it's truly a shame that Fox is going to prematurely restrict the field because they'll only allow ten candidates in their debates. Which start in a month. How crazy is that?
I sincerely hope that all the rest of them figure out a way to hold their own debate. Maybe on You tube.
Personally, I find the debates totally meaningless an unhelpful, but it's a sad truth that many use them to decide who they'll vote for, instead of taking a good look at what a given candidate really represents.

(23,156 posts)The Republican debates. As carried on MST3K. What a delight that would be.

(17,469 posts)I would check to see if Frank Coniff is planning to live-Tweet the debate. He is the most politically engaged of the old cast, and was a semi-regular on Countdown with Keith O.

My vote would be huge in tilting the election toward the nominee as one of the 19 popular votes

(24,329 posts)All of America has been waiting to hear whether or not 1 term, former Virginia Jim Gilmore will run
Now that he is, the Republican and Democratic fields can close up shop
On a more serious note: I figure he and Pataki won't make it to 2016
Also, an analyst pointed out that waiting until right before the first debate or just after it is a good strategy
If you announce right before the debate, when final polls come out, you may get enough of a bump to make the Top 10
If you wait until right after the debate, you aren't saddled with the, 'Wasn't in the Top 10 so why should I care?'

(13,616 posts)I really do think a lot of this is just a smokescreen for Jeb. He would be taking hard hits if there was not a lot of distraction, especially since this chaos makes it hard tom scrutinize, where Hillary cannot help but get the microscopes and bright lights already.
