Microsoft to Shed Up To 7,800 Jobs, Mostly in Phone Business

Microsoft Corp. announced plans Wednesday cut up to 7,800 positions and take a $7.6 billion write-down on its Nokia business amid efforts to restructure its struggling phone hardware business.

The technology company also said it would take a restructuring charge of $750 million to $850 million.

"We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem including our first- party device family," CEO Satya Nadella wrote in an email to employees. "In the near-term, we'll run a more effective and focused phone portfolio while retaining capability for long-term reinvention in mobility."

The layoffs come a year after the Redmond-Wash., based software and hardware maker said it planned to let go roughly 18,000 employees.

Who would want a phone that works as well as a Windows operating system?

As far as I'm concerned, anything with the name Microsoft on it is a virus. But, thats just my opinion.

1. My Windows computer works perfectly well.

My last phone was a Windows phone and I had no problems with it. I'm have an Android now but am thinking of switching back when Windows 10 comes out. Usually people that have the biggest problem with Microsoft products are the people that don't use them. Let me guess, you have never owned a Windows phone, have an iPhone and a Mac.

2. No, I'm running Windows 7 on my Desktop.

And I still have a laptop with XP on it. Tried Linux, didn't care for it.

Win 7 was getting too buggy, so I formatted and re-installed, and even with a clean install, the damn thing crashes almost daily.

And I'll stick with my Samsung phone.

4. If you have a computer that crashes daily it has a serious problem. It could be hardware.

I can't remember the number of years it's been since I had any of my computers crash. If I were you I would upgrade to Windows 10 next month.

5. That's too bad because the Nokia phones are great

The best camera, battery and ease of use, plus they are pretty.
Where they fell down was getting the same apps that the other phones have.

Each department has to generate a profit over a period of time or be cut.
That's how you determine which departments are cash cows and which are a drag on the bottom line.

which I am in. Nokia lost the battle a long time ago. Put that together with a company that has never had great adoption as a platform and that is a recipe for a disaster. If you are not apple or android you have no chance.
