House Republicans Sneak Sex-Ed Restriction Into ‘No Child Left Behind’ Rewrite

Source: Reality check

by Emily Crockett, Federal Policy Reporter, RH Reality Check

July 8, 2015 - 7:16 pm

The U.S. House voted Wednesday afternoon to pass a major education bill that includes a ban on funding for any sex education programs that “normalize teen sexual activity as an expected behavior.”

The Student Success Act (HR 5) is a Republican rewrite of No Child Left Behind, a controversial education initiative that was one of President George W. Bush’s key policy priorities.
...................

But tucked away in the more than 600-page bill is language that seems intended to strip funding for evidence-based sex education in schools.
...............

The bill also prohibits funding for contraceptive distribution in schools, or for sex education or HIV-prevention education programs that don’t teach “the health benefits of abstinence.”.................

When language is added it comes from a specific congressperson. Why is it no-one names them? There is a record kept of those sources and it is public information. We need to add their name to that headline so we will know who to bill for childcare and other costs.

Everyone knows you can't get pregnant the first time, and forbidding someone from doing something always works!

Honest to God, if you don't want people to have abortions shouldn't you do everything possible to prevent young women from getting pregnant? Unless when you knock up one of your constituents, its OK for your situation, wink, wink! I think they just want to punish the woman for getting pregnant

Too bad ABSTINENCE PROGRAMS don't result in abstinence.

And it's really too bad that Republicans don't operate in the real world.

... while Abstinence the Behavior technically works, Abstinence the Policy/Program does not.

if your goal is to reduce unwanted pregnancies and abortions and STDs, then implement programs that deal directly with those issues -- contraceptives, education, etc.

If your goal is to control others' behavior but ensure they can still be "punished" by pregnancy and STDs, then implement abstinence programs.

Oh -- And obviously, Bristol Palin is a hypocrite.

My 5th grader had his first sex ed classes this year. But they did not actually talk about what people do when having sex. Instead, they talked about anatomy and what sort of changes to your body--and your relationships with your family and other people--that you can expect as you enter puberty. He loved the classes. He said after the classes the boys felt a lot more comfortable talking to the girls. Things didn't seem so mysterious and scary any more.

As they get older, i.e. in middle school--when girls can get pregnant, the classes will get into more detail about birth control and pregnancy. I am so glad we live in California in a sane school district.
