Scott Walker Signs State Budget Axing Tenure For College Professors
Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS
MADISON, Wis. (AP) Gov. Scott Walker signed the next Wisconsin state budget into law on Sunday, brushing aside complaints from his own party about the $73 billion spending plan and fulfilling his promise to get it done before he announces he is running for the Republican nomination for president.
Walker signed the budget at Valveworks USA, a valve and wellhead component manufacturer in Waukesha. He made scores of changes to the spending plan using his veto powers that he said returned $44.5 million to the state's general fund over the next two years.
"The budget I signed today again brings real reform to Wisconsin and allows everyone more opportunity for a brighter future," Walker said in a statement.
Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca, a Kenosha Democrat, said in a statement that the budget "throws the people of Wisconsin under Governor Walker's campaign bus." Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling, a La Crosse Democrat, said Wisconsin residents deserve better.

(1,127 posts)Walker was elected governor of Wisconsin in 2010, defeating the Democratic nominee, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. After being sworn into office in 2011, Walker introduced a budget repair plan which limited many collective bargaining powers for most public employees. The legislation led to significant protests at the Wisconsin State Capitol and an effort to recall Walker. In June 2012, Walker faced Barrett in Wisconsin's only gubernatorial recall election. After emerging as the winner, Walker became the only governor in the U.S. to date to win a gubernatorial recall election.

Not sure how useful Rate My Professor is though.
I suspect Wisconsin has decent professors, despite this site's ratings... for now.
NO Tenure would make me look elsewhere for a teaching job in college and I suspect the best are drawn to better paying jobs which are probably all private colleges.

(13,340 posts)... If they do, we may be looking to move. As it is, my wife's university has a hard time retaining good talent since the pay is mediocre and the teaching load high for a research university.

(7,526 posts)I graduated from public four year school in Wisconsin in 2010, and during my time there it was no secret that universities in Minnesota and Illinois would poach professors from Wisconsin because of the pay disparities.
http://chronicle.com/article/faculty-salaries-table-2012/131433
Outside of UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee, no other public university in Wisconsin has an average pay higher than $76,000 for a full professor. Minnesota on the other hand has only one school that averages below $79,000. Illinois has only one school which averages below $81,000, and only two that average below $89,000.
To put it in another perspective - I have five years of experience in my field. I just looked up my professors salaries online for kicks and giggles. Only two of the professors in my area of study still make more money than me.

So, Walker is working to destroy all education in the state, destroying the UW System which is exceptional.
Why do people vote for this guy?

(15,882 posts)There are very few places that won't be affected by this, and I suspect it won't be the last one. More states will follow.
It's horrendous, it's paving the path to our destruction, but people like Wanker don't care. The country has lost the idea of investing in ourselves, which is what made us powerful and secure.
The country is either dead, or it will be covered with the equivalent of tar paper shacks and gated communities as we go forward. The attraction to not paying your bills is too strong - makes you think you are richer than you really are. 'Till things come apart.

(5,754 posts)I have tenure, but the MBAs have decided that it doesn't guarantee you a salary. They pay piece work rates for every activity and you get a different sized check every year. New faculty get salary and research support for 3 years. After that, you either get NIH money or you're gone. New hires are all women or have foreign names. I'm one of those, so it's just an observation.

(30,761 posts)She hates Snotty. So do most of her friends and associates, many of whom are academics.
Before my daughter got married, her roommate completed her PhD and left the state. She did not even look at job offers in Wisconsin. She and many other saw what was coming.
My daughter finished her job, finished a second master's degree, and moved out of Wisconsin. Her husband died not long ago. They were married only a little over eighteen months. She is not sure she wants to stay where she is. She may get her PhD before going on to another job. She will not be returning to Madison or anywhere in Wisconsin. Academics who can do so are already leaving the state. I have heard them say that they think Snotty has a war going on with Madison and Milwaukee, because they both defied him.
I have heard speculation about the details of Snotty's dropping out so close to graduation. No one really knows. That question should be shoved down his throat, and shouted about over and over. If our candidates and subjected to the kind of scrutiny that Obama, HRC and Bernie are getting, then we need to do the same to theirs.
Why did Snotty drop out, so close to graduation? Was he asked to leave or face expulsion? That is a possibility. Sometimes, students who get in trouble are given the option of withdrawing from school to avoid a black mark on their records.

(30,761 posts)we would be facing the same thing. Our legislature is fighting Rauner, who is just as bad.
Yes, we voted for him (not my family). But he won by a very narrow margin.
GOTV, people!
It is still possible for the people of Wisconsin to do something about Snotty. They need to strengthen their Democratic party at the state level. They need to push the investigations that are going on against Snotty and his cohorts right now!
