Hillary Clinton Calls Iran Nuclear Deal 'Important Step'
Source: Bloomberg
She speaks after meeting with House Democrats on Capitol Hill in Washington.
Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that based on what she knows about the deal that Iran and world powers reached Tuesday, the agreement is an important step in putting the lid on that nation's nuclear program.
Clinton spoke after meeting with House Democrats on Capitol Hill in Washington. She didn't specifically urge members to support the deal or discuss the potential challenge of protecting it against Republican congressional majorities that appear broadly opposed to it, several Democratic lawmakers said.
She said this was the same kind of arms agreement that other presidents have worked on, but much more important because of the tenor of the times, and what's going on in the region, Representative Louise Slaughter said, predicting Democrats would have the votes to sustain a presidential veto if it came to that.
Representative Gerry Connolly of Virginia said Clinton had given the deal a full-throated endorsement. Facing the cameras, Clinton was measured, saying the agreement would have to be enforced vigorously and Irans bad behavior on human rights must be addressed.
She told House Democrats the deal was the fruit of work she began as secretary of state aimed at freezing and rolling back much of Iran's nuclear program, according to Connolly. She thinks it's a very positive development, he said.

First, FWIW, that "we" includes a whole bunch of countries, not just USA. Go gripe to the French, Chinese, UK, et. al. about how awful they are too.
Second, this accord has to do with nuclear technology, not human rights.
I challenge you to spend a week in Tehran and fail to understand the basic abrogations of human rights that occur on a daily basis there. This deal will help improve circumstances for a lot of people--mainly women.

The 'human rights' statement was Mrs. Clinton's own, if you read her statement. You're right - this accord is not about human rights, exactly, although she qualified her statement by including the subject. It just rubbed me wrong. Gotta make sure Israel, increasingly a human rights pariah, is thrown a few bones...

(1,150 posts)his perspectives regarding Israel do concern me. Not that he 'out-hawks' any of the current crop of candidates on the subject of Israel, but he lived in Isreali Kibbutzes for a time in his youth and his voting record is very pro-Likud.
Of course, so is pretty much every other American legislator's voting record, but I would really like to see Obama's more demanding approach toward Israel continued...

(15,369 posts)but I have no reason to believe that his views on Israel - whatever they may be - would in any way diminish his full support for this Iran deal.
I can't imagine that any one of Hillary, Bernie or Martin would NOT support this fully and completely. I don't know enough about Lincoln Chafee or Jim Webb (and unless one of them miraculously becomes the Dem nominee, I likely won't bother to find out more) but, since neither appears to be a complete radical RW zealot nutjob like every single one of the GOPer candidates, they likely are happy about this agreement as well.

The basic groundwork had begun before he took over at State, but he worked like a demon to make it happen.

(22,651 posts)Sometimes I work longgg hours, 7 days a week but then I need couple days to recover from that schedule.
I couldn't do it if there was world travel and discussions with global Leaders. They have super stamina, Kerry and Clinton both.
Add on top of that the years of historic attacks by republicans, they must be excellent at ignoring that silly noise.

(59,503 posts)In addition, Obama started the secret outreach. To do that, he used then Senator Kerry to determine if Oman was willing to be the back channel.
The secret back channel discussions were started using Jake Sullivan, a longtime HRC aide now working on her campaign and William Burns, a deputy SoS. It was early 3013, Sullivan was then working for Biden and Burns for Kerry.
The timing of when Rohani was elected was such that HRC was already on the verge of leaving office. Not to mention, she was dealing with medical issues I'm December 2012.
In comparison, Kerry spent a huge amount of time working on each phase of the negotiations. In fact, the other cabinet member to credit is his long time friend, Moniz. Both spend months' worth of days working overtime on this.
Equating them on this is silly. In fact, in the short interview I saw she was positive, but would not commit she was for it. She will likely be President, Kerry won't. This is likely the biggest thing he has accomplished. Why dilute his credit to give it to HRC, who will have plenty of chances for her own legacy?

(1,150 posts)Secretary Clinton had almost nothing to do with the negotiations. This is a triumph of John Kerry and Barack Obama. And Kerry was the one who made it happen, with a tremendous amount of long, hard work.
When he was nominated, it seemed like another 'establishment' approach to me. I'm pleased to be entirely wrong.
