Bobby Jindal announces investigation into Planned Parenthood
Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune
Gov. Bobby Jindal on Tuesday announced he's directed the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals to investigate Planned Parenthood activities in the state after a video surfaced that claims the organization is selling fetal body parts.
The video, which was posted to YouTube by the Center for Medical Progress, shows a woman discussing the harvest of fetal organs and body parts from partial-birth abortions. The Center for Medical Progress identifies the woman as Dr. Deborah Nucatola, who is Planned Parenthood Federation of America's national medical director.
The Washington Post described the Center for Medical Progress as an anti-abortion group.
There was no indication that the video or the activities described in it had ties to Louisiana, and Planned Parenthood does not operate abortion clinics in Louisiana. But Jindal said he was ordering an investigation in part because Planned Parenthood is planning to open a clinic in New Orleans.

An update to the story has a link to the response by Planned Parenthood. The $4 million clinic planned for New Orleans will not be able to open because Jindal's order includes suspending the issuance of new licenses.

(112,237 posts)The Planned Parenthood Federation of America has issued a statement saying the video cited by Gov. Bobby Jindal in launching an investigation into the group's practices is deceptively edited and false.
Jindal issued a statement earlier Tuesday calling for a Department investigation into Planned Parenthood, saying the video appears to show the discussion of a "systematic harvesting and trafficking of human body parts." But Planned Parenthood says that what's actually being discussed is the donation of tissue for scientific research.
"A well funded group established for the purpose of damaging Planned Parenthood's mission and services has promoted a heavily edited, secretly recorded videotape that falsely portrays Planned Parenthood's participation in tissue donation programs that support lifesaving scientific research," Planned Parenthood said. "Similar false accusations have been put forth by opponents of abortion services for decades. These groups have been widely discredited and their claims fall apart on closer examination, just as they do in this case."

(1,254 posts)The problem here is Jindal is distorting the truth. The law governing "fetal Tissue" is this (NHI Revitalization Act of 1993). https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/103/s1/text
Note what is EXACTLY prohibited by law:
(b) SOLICITATION OR ACCEPTANCE OF TISSUE AS DIRECTED DONATION FOR USE IN TRANSPLANTATION- It shall be unlawful for any person to solicit or knowingly acquire, receive, or accept a donation of human fetal tissue for the purpose of transplantation of such tissue into another person if the donation affects interstate commerce, the tissue will be or is obtained pursuant to an induced abortion, and--
(1) the donation will be or is made pursuant to a promise to the donating individual that the donated tissue will be transplanted into a recipient specified by such individual;
(2) the donated tissue will be transplanted into a relative of the donating individual; or
(3) the person who solicits or knowingly acquires, receives, or accepts the donation has provided valuable consideration for the costs associated with such abortion.
It is not breaking the law for clinics to sell tissue and organs to research facilities FOR RESEARCH. It is against the law to sell tissue and organs for TRANSPLANTS.
Funny how those pesky little details go missing or are distorted by the right.

What I will not understand if I live to 100: when O'Douchebag started talking about bringing underage females into the US to work as prostitutes, why didn't anyone call the cops on him and have him carried away for investigation? My first reaction would have been, when it became clear what he wanted, to excuse myself, go to the receptionist, tell her "there's a guy in here who's trying to set up a whorehouse, get the police in here now" and stall him until they arrived.

(79 posts)Never mind that the video has already been debunked, Swindle is getting some desperately-needed media glare for his laughable 'presidential campaign,' he'll soon be stuffing his pockets with anti-choicers' money, and taxpayers will foot the bill for his baseless "investigations"!
But who REALLY gets hurt? Planned Parenthood and its clients.
IMHO, the timing is SO 'convenient' that it's hard to believe Jindal had no prior knowledge of the vid before its release.
And the fact that Sarah and Bristol Palin are also hyping the vid really gives it the "Bad Housekeeping Seal of Disapproval" ...

(9,426 posts)'Too bad Bristol Palin did not go to a Planned Parenthood center. Maybe she would not be pregnant with a baby whose father is unknown. It might even be a "black guy from Anchorage". With her sexual history she needs to be on birth control. Those PayMe's breed like rabbits. $carah's Pac is getting low on donations, so the family will have to start looking for jobs. They are trying to market HS dropout Bristol as an "activist" with a blog written by Nancy French.

America needs more Federal oversight on the States to keep health care services and benefits available to all Americans equally.
Goes for our vote rights too, Federal gov should administer our vote, without any state gov or local gov. involvement at all.
