Protesters Fly Confederate Flags To Greet Obama In Oklahoma

Source: Huffington Post

A group of Confederate-flag-waving protesters gathered near the Oklahoma high school where President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak Wednesday afternoon, insisting that what they were doing was about heritage rather than racism.

"We're not gonna stand down from our heritage. You know, this flag's not racist. And I know a lot of people think it is, but it's really not. It's just a southern thing, that's it," Trey Johnson, who drove three hours from Texas to join the protest, told KFOR.

"It is about history. It's not about racism at all because both black men, as well as white men, stood side by side," said another protester, who gave her name as Stephanie. "They fought together for the beliefs that they believed in."

Obama is traveling to Durant High School to give a speech on expanding economic opportunity for communities nationwide, including the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

Yeah, nothing racist at all about waving the flag of a slaveholding, failed, secessionist nation at the USA's first black president.

Isn't it funny how all these "It's just a southern thing" folks choose to use the symbol of that particular five years to represent the entire heritage of their region?

And, of course, never mind the fact that Oklahoma wasn't a state, wasn't part of the Confederacy and was instead deemed "indian Territory" during the Civil War.

I lived in Oklahoma for 50 years. It ain't the one of old, baby, but it is sure meaner than it used to be.

Saddest damn thing I ever saw - but it's everywhere now, just dressed up in different colors.

I know a lot of people like those in the picture, and they are the backbone of the center of this country. Their parents were raised by parents who taught them to turn over black-kids school buses, their parents then lived through this carnage that has been doing what an entire nation used to do only to watch it be stolen by crooks and facilitated by people we voted for.

They are now having kids who will do worse than they will.

So far, just going through the hoops they had placed in front of them. Some escape. These didn't.

ignorant and pulls others with them. Eventually they might be beaten, but I doubt it. They will be marginalized a bit, but never change. And they have the ability to hurt people in a lot of different ways.

The kind of person I am talking about helps grow these numbers, so it is worth recognizing them for who they are. Even with the events of these past few weeks one will see a person or two change, but for a lot of them it is just cementing their resolve and hate.

So I like to know who my enemy is.

What does that mean. What does it do for you or anyone? I would gladly pledge allegiance to the Constitution, and our laws. I would also pledge allegiance to the American people. But being allegiant to a flag, really means nothing, and smacks of nationalism and jingoism.

The blacks who "fought" for the Confederacy were slaves who were conscripted towards the end of the war when it was pretty much hopeless for the rebels, and they were threatened with death if they didn't join the war effort. They also deserted in droves whenever they encountered join soldiers.

I'm so fucking sick and tired of these people and their revisionist bullshit. Most of the slave states didn't even allow free blacks within their borders. Does anybody really think that they had a vested effort in the South winning the war.

Obviously she was out sick when this aspect of the civil war was discussed and the reasons why those men fought (on both sides no less).

These are the assholes that truly make me ashamed of my country. Granted, they are all probably dyed in the wool teabaggers and Obama-haters; but it just makes me sick to think they are so damned dense they can't grasp what stupid clowns they are for the white racist clappers.

None of them look terribly bright in the photo..but then, that's just my impression. They could be normal human beings, but I'm not going to give them that much credit, based on their asinine actions.

I mean if it's not hatred then shouldn't there be a sign saying something like "Dixie Welcomes Obama"? along with the flags???

Has a white president ever been greeted with rebel flags??

Also more rebel flags than American ones. Obama is actually the president of the United States not the Confederate ones.

How would these people feel if there was a large contingent of latinos waving Mexican Flags and greeting the president??

It just seems if it is all about heritage they would be more about welcome and less about the flags? Nobody even asked them if they support Obama. I think that's relevant.
