(5,668 posts)nice people follow them everywhere. really need to crack that myth wide open someday. I'm not pro abortion I couldn't call myself pro choice. Once upon a time I was. Not anymore. However there are the known exceptions.... $$$ doesn't seem to be one of them right now. because some Churches have caught on to this fact and do offer assistance etc. But as long as Koch brothers (satan worshipers) are there saying they are against abortion. nice people will continue to make deals with the devil. I'm saying this more so those with the right words can not attack but say in a kind way (not stooping to their level of name calling) so this BS can stop and I seem to remember God wanted us to take care of this earth of his. Think that got lost on the way to GREED

Scientifically speaking, the measurable amounts are well within the limits that are harmless,
and may even enhance health.
Just like Fukushima, this spill may actually improve the lives of everyone in the vicinity.
Oily emulsions are organic, carbon-based compounds.
WE are comprised of organic, carbon-based compounds.
Jennifer Lawrence, George Clooney and Beyonce, are composed of organic, carbon-based molecules.
How can these organic compounds, based on all the same molecules and atoms, possibly
be harmful to living creatures, which are essentially made of the same stuff?
This is just more hysterical environmental Naziism, while upstanding corporations try so hard
to serve The People.
Such hideous injustice to a fine, upstanding corporation and their polite,
warm-hearted investor-groups.
It's environmental fascism, I tell you!

Please rate this post as a simulation of the pathetic industry apologists we sometimes get in response
to topics like this, Fukushima.
A--Great job of satire, skewering corporate hypocrisy.
B--Not bad, but a bit obvious. Still, I did laugh at parts.
C--OK, but rather heavy-handed, although somewhat accurate in its portrayal of industry propaganda.
D--Nice try, and I agree with the basic sentiment, but way too obvious and not that clever.
F--This satire is unfair to the oil industry and the fine people who defend its unquestionable integrity

(2,941 posts)With the Clintons, it's never a simple matter of just doing the right thing.
Other sources have reported conflicts of interest between State Department officials and TransCanada, finding an unusual degree of support inside the department for the Keystone pipeline project. Some of these findings are related to people like Paul Elliott, now working at TransCanada. Elliott was a former campaign official with the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton, the current Secretary of State who is intimately involved in the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline.

More than two dozen State Department emails obtained by the advocacy group Friends of the Earth under a Freedom of Information Act request provide an unusual glimpse into the lobbying for the Keystone permit, which has become a battleground in the national debate over how to address climate change.
They show how Elliott tried to exploit relationships built in political campaigns, with mixed results. The emails are almost all between Elliott and a special assistant to Cheryl Mills, Clintons chief of staff. All three knew one another from working on Clintons presidential campaign.
Further, the emails show that officials floated the idea of a two-year delay in the pipelines review to a TransCanada lawyer and that Elliott was lobbying the State Department on behalf of TransCanada for more than a year before he first registered as a lobbyist.
The Foreign Agents Registration Act holds that all persons acting as agents of foreign corporations disclose their relationship with the foreign principal, as well as any activities and disbursements in support of those activities
"The American people need to know when foreign entities are trying to influence the actions of the U.S. government," said Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica in a statement on Tuesday. "Unfortunately, the Canadian oil corporation behind the Keystone XL pipeline was trying to do just that, and its top lobbyist failed to disclose what he was up to. The Justice Department has a responsibility to investigate this serious violation of law."
"Moreover," Pica said, "State Department officials must explain why they maintained a cozy relationship with this unregistered foreign agent while he lobbied them illegally. Why did State Department officials provide insider information and coaching to Mr. Elliott and TransCanada? This is more evidence that the State Department has failed to meet its responsibility to conduct a thorough, unbiased review of the proposed pipeline."

During a 2010 speaking engagement, Clinton appeared to be supportive of the pipeline from Canada and told an audience that her Department of State was inclined to" give TransCanada approval for its project.
This is what Clinton said about the Keystone XL pipeline in response to a question at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco event:
"So as I say, we've not yet signed off on it. But we are inclined to do so and we are for several reasons going back to one of your original questions we're either going to be dependent on dirty oil from the Gulf or dirty oil from Canada. And until we can get our act together as a country and figure out that clean, renewable energy is in both our economic interests and the interests of our planet, I mean, I don't think it will come as a surprise to anyone how deeply disappointed the President and I are about our inability to get the kind of legislation through the Senate that the United States was seeking.(emphasis mine)"

(8,646 posts)This was a NEW pipeline - roughly a year or so old. This pipeline also had a state-of-the-art spill detection system that FAILED - the spill was detected by a worker walking by.
This company is also known in the oil industry (among those who work in that industry) for being an especially crappy company, especially with regards to their environmental record. By the way, it's not currently a Canadian company (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexen). It was, but then it was bought out - with a lot of opposition because of a less than stellar record of the buyers not only with regards to environment, but human rights as well.
This spill also shows that even new pipelines have risks. However, oil transported by rail has also been booming around here (Alberta). I know someone that transfers the oil on trains to trucks in one small town - he said the traffic has doubled in the last 3 years. That's also a disaster waiting to happen.
The only answer is to come up with alternatives. As long as people need energy and don't have alternatives, oil will be used. As long as oil is used, it will have to be transported.
It's time for governments to step in to fund research into more environmentally friendly methods of generating energy. It's been now proven that expecting private industry to take initiative was foolish.
