Judge blasts ICE, says immigrant children, mothers should be released from detention centers

Source: Los Angeles Times

A federal judge has ruled that hundreds of immigrant women and children held in detention facilities should be released, finding that their detention was in serious violation of an earlier court settlement.

U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee in Los Angeles ruled late Friday that federal officials had violated an 18-year-old court settlement regarding the detention of migrant children.

... “It is astonishing that Defendants have enacted a policy requiring such expensive infrastructure without more evidence to show that it would be compliant with an Agreement that has been in effect for nearly 20 years,” Gee wrote in her decision.

The ruling is a major setback for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, who established the family detention facilities after the U.S.-Mexico border saw a significant influx of children and their parents — most from Central America who illegally crossed the Southwest border — last summer.

From the article linked in the OP: "Many of the Central American families and children who crossed the Southwest border illegally last summer were fleeing crushing poverty and escalating gang violence."

These are not people crossing one border to get jobs - they are asylum seekers fleeing conditions that are life threatening, especially to women and children. They are crossing through more than one country to get to a place that is still rumored to be the land of the free that welcomes refugees.

If they are sent back, they have nothing to return to, no homes, no jobs, no food and a very real prospect of death.

in detention camps, even children with no adults present.

OMG, President Obama why did you stand in front of those buses full of kids and scream at them to 'go back home' and 'lock them up'

Oh god, President Obama why did you ignore all the "legal in America" relatives and family who would have taken in all those mothers and children while they waited for their Federal court hearing. Saved us Americans some Federal multi-millions housing 2,000 mothers and children.

Thank God a Federal Judge has some common sense.

note, this is I think without a President Like Obama republican immigrant haters would have those children working in chain gangs in the American Detention Camps for Mothers & Children..
