Israeli Spy Pollard Will Be Released in November, Lawyers Say

Source: Wall Street Journal

WASHINGTON—A federal parole panel has granted parole to Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, with a planned release in November, his attorneys said Tuesday.

The announcement said the decision by the parole commission was unanimous and wasn’t in any way related to U.S. negotiations with Iran.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that U.S. officials were preparing to release Mr. Pollard, and that some officials in the Obama administration hoped his release after 30 years in prison would smooth over some of the Israeli anger over the pending Iran deal.

The lawyers for Mr. Pollard said the U.S. government didn’t oppose his release.

Let's hope this patches up things with the Jewish State of Israel. Allies spy on each other all the time: ask Germany, France, UK, etc. It will also be interesting to see how this affects the Iran deal and sentiments towards it.

Funny how facts interfere so often with the instant outrage media idea of "news".

If you are not outraged enough by the information supplied then it is not newsworthy enough to be called "news", is it?

The Justice Department said Friday that although Pollard was ordered to serve life in prison after being convicted of selling U.S. secrets to the Israeli government, the terms of his sentence require that he be released after 30 years — a date that will arrive this fall — unless the government can prove that he violated rules in prison or is likely to commit additional crimes.

Thus he still will be on parole the rest of his life, but he will be on the streets UNLESS he violates his parole. Under the laws that existed at the time of his sentencing, life included the right to be released on parole. Life without Parole was just coming into the law and had NOT by the time he had committed his crimes been extended to include the crimes he was convicted of.

covers the Jewish State. Its a shame because it does OK on others, tho not so hot. While yes they do want to increase their Muslim audience, that cannot be done at the expense of the facts.

by going to Israel? Or will the administration simply give him permission.

Will his triumphant reception in Israel be viewed as a slap in the face of the US, or will we, as usual, say "thank you great ally, may I have another"?

And his release won't end the Israeli attempts to scuttle the Iran deal.

a country we don't have to worry about uprisings in, or gross human rights violations (at least within the Green Line, and even with regard to the WB, the Palestinians still haven't retired the idea of destroying Israel as an ethnic-Jewish majority state), an economic crisis because one single resource, you know. I love the Jewish State of Israel.

We give them money, military hardware and diplomatic cover for their brutal actions.

They give us? Nada. They ignore our wishes on items like the settlements. They are openly opposing the president of the United States on a treaty with Iran that is clearly in the best interest of the US (and Israel too). They have become directly aligned with the republican party. They urged us into an idiotic war in Iraq. We suffer the blowback from their actions because of our support.

I love the USA. Israel, not so much.
