Security firm discovers yet another ‘fatal’ bug in Android phones

Source: Science Recorder

Trend Micro, an antivirus developer and internet security firm, allege they have uncovered a “fatal” bug latent in the code of Google Android phones, which could effect any Android with operating systems ranging from versions 4.3 to 5.1.1. According to a recent report, this bug can cause sudden system crashes, “disable or even turn off the screen and the calling feature and much more permanently on a smartphone.”

Trend Micro engineer Wish Wu put things succinctly in a recent blog post when he wrote, “We have discovered a vulnerability in Android that can render a phone apparently dead, silent, unable to make calls, with a lifeless screen.”

Interestingly, according to the report no users have reported problems with the bug so far. Google is already fast at work on a patch for their phones, though this hasn’t helped the company’s public image considering another massive security weakness dubbed ‘StageFright’ was discovered in the Android just a few weeks ago. Only time will tell whether or not Google will step up their security protocols and design better protected operating systems.

Stagefright, for those unaware, is even more potentially devastating than the most recently discovered bug; though it requires the user to interact with a malicious website or data. According to the same report regarding Stagefright, “Once an encounter occurs, the smartphone can be triggered anytime from any location around the world, and at any time of the day.” Android users are cautioned against visiting unfamiliar websites, or downloading suspicious apps, until further security updates are implemented.

continued to work flawlessly today, also without turning their owners over to Agent Mike for reading news about Bernie Sanders or calling the cops because the GPS registered them at a bar for over 30 minutes.

But that tends to not get the clickbait hits of alarmist wild hypothesizing.
