The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Tuesday that 11,672 people were taken to hospitals nationwide to be treated for heatstroke in the week from July 27 to Aug 2, the first time ever that the number of heatstroke patents has surpassed 10,000 in one week.
Tokyo had the highest number of heatstroke victims at 1,095, followed by Aichi with 989, Fuji TV reported. Three deaths in Aichi were attributed to heatstroke, bringing the total number of deaths from heatstroke to 25 nationwide so far this summer.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the scorching weather is expected to continue through the weekend.
Health ministry officials are urging people, especially the elderly, to drink plenty of water and use the air conditioner.

(3,998 posts)Awful time of year to be going. They are only going because their son lives there and has stage IV rectal cancer. Luke has lived in Hiroshima pref. for 12 years now, teaching English and is married to a Japanese woman. Anyways, my friends are 71 and 81 and this heat and humidity is going to be rough. Like me, they are Angelenos and can't take high humidity. Hotel has air conditioning, Luke's home does not. They will only be there a week, luckily.

(17,101 posts)considering it wasn't mentioned in the article. Right now, at 2 am it's 28c with 94% humidity. The highs for the next few days are in the mid 30's again with high humidity, hovering around 80%.
The humidity is the worst part of it. I hope the weather cools down for them soon, especially for the sake of the elderly.
